i want to start with you, garrett. how much more do we know about trump's decision to select pete hegseth to be secretary of defense? >> not a lot. it is in keeping with how he views a lot of the appointments. he likes to see people who he thinks fits the central casting idea of the positions he's trying to select. he likes people who have the appearance of loyalty to him and defending he and his policies on television. hegseth fits s those categorie. despite being a veteran and a combat veteran himself, you know, he lacks much institutional knowledge of the agency he would lead. i think he could face somewhat of a difficult confirmation process. this is where you'll hear me say a lot over the next several months, elections have consequences here. because trump could afford to lose a couple of republican votes like lisa murkowski and still get hegseth over the line. this would be one i would circle on my calendar, from what we have seen so far, the one that is likely to be the biggest uphill climb in terms of a confirm

nbc news senior capitol hill correspondent garrett haake.lisher and editor in chief of "the cook political report." ramesh ponnuru, editor of "national review, and maria teresa kumar, president of voto latino. thank you all for being here on a big sunday after election day. a lot to chew on. garrett, let me start with you. you've been covering the trump campaign from the very beginning. i spoke to president-elect trump. he believes he's got a mandate after this decisive victory. what are you hearing from inside the campaign and your sources? >> his team feels vindicated. they had a theory of the case. it proved out. they won big, bigger than some of them anticipated it would. and the mandate is broad. trump is having conversations with world leaders and starting to flush out his foreign policy and domestically, and you heard john barrasso plans to make his economic agenda the senate and the house's economic agenda and this is not paul ryan's congress he's coming into. he's coming into essentially a maga congress here and i think stylisticall

garrett, let's start with you.t happens next, and how is the trump team reacting to today's news? >> reporter: well, for the trump team, more delay is essentially another victory. they're out with a boastful statement calling this a total and complete victory for donald trump. the reality here is what happens next remains in judge merchan's court. it's not clear when or if he'll issue a substantiative ruling on this. he's going to have to make a decision on sentencing. the trump team is moving on almost entirely from this case. they have viewed it as a distraction for the president-elect who's even nominated or selected, i should say, one of his defense attorneys from this case to be a nominee, to be a deputy attorney general. no rer sign i can find that they're looking past this and towards his administration next year. >> thank you. danny, prosecutors say they are open to the idea of pausing everything, actually, for four years until mr. trump is no longer the president. any sense how judge merchan might respond

one is the sex trafficking investigation that garrett detailed there. it was ultimately closed without any charges, but if confirmed, gaetz would be the top law enforcement officer of the very same agency that criminally investigated him for years. the other concern expressed by officials is more about how he could use the department's resources to settle scores against the president-elect's perceived political enemies. we have heard gaetz take aim at top prosecutors in both new york and georgia along with special counsel jack smith, lester. >> and you're reporting jack smith may resign. >> he ran out of time, bottom line there. the federal case he's overseeing in washington and florida are nowhere close to a trial. they were bogged down in delays and appeals from the very outset. you combine that with the timing. that's just a reality that the justice department will not prosecute a sitting president. the only question now, lester, is whether he can get a publicly released report out before the former president is inaugurated. >> laura, thank you. >>>

garrett haake, thanks very much. and with the candidates making their final pitches, a huge number of people have already voted in this election. hallie jackson is here. what do we know about the early voting? >> well, a lot of people are doing a lot of early voting, lester. that's the big takeaway. and the big number right here, some 78 million early votes have been cast either in person or in the mail. this is a big number. it's not quite what we saw in 2020, but remember, that was the pandemic. but look at this, it outpaces 2012 and it outpaces 2016 as well. look at the partisan breakdown. that's probably your next question. we're seeing republicans cutting into the advantage that democrats traditionally typically have on early voting. 41% registered democrats. 39% registered republicans. caveat, we don't know specifically who they're filling out that ballot for, but it's still a data point. and this is interesting here. the gender gap when it comes to early voting. nationally more women have early voted than men

garrett, i will begin with you. the order of these choices strikes me. can we say that these three things will be his top priorities for his administration? we are talking about deportations and deregulations and hard line positions on iran and china. >> yeah. look. i think the choices very much point in that direction, particularly the national security positions, marco rubio, mike waltz, and also tom homan coming back in this border czar role where he essentially will report directly to donald trump. these are priorities that trump laid out on the trail and i think they wanted to make clear their priorities they will follow through on. beyond that, i wouldn't read too much into the order themselves to borrow a phrase from nancy pelosi. sometimes guys who need jobs and guys that need jobs and lee din and elise stefanik needed to be found positions within this administration and i don't think necessarily to announcement this right away to send this big announcement. >> just to push back a little on it, garrett. the border czar was meant to send a signal

joining us now nbc's garrett haake from capitol hill. garrett, good morning. what do we know about whittaker and what prompted trump to tap him as ambassador to nato? >> reporter: well, jose, matthew whitaker is a former u.s. attorney and acting attorney general serving in that role after he had been jeff sessions' chief of staff during the first trump administration. he has been loyal to donald trump, perhaps the most important quality in any of these cabinet selections that trump is making. he appeared freakily on the campaign trail. he has from his bio, wiki or announcement of his selection no foreign policy experience of any kind. as trump points out, he was a university of iowa football player and as best i can tell the only ambassador to nato selection to play in a rose bowl. i am a little bit sarcastic here, jose. this is what we have seen from trump selections so far with personal loyalty to trump, sort of closeness to the maga base and world being valued above traditional experience for the roles these people are being, they hope, confirmed. >> and me

garrett haake is reporting from washington, d.c.lican congressman from florida carlos curbelo and msnbc political analyst. so, garrett, how are trump's endorsements shaping these races? >> well, chris, part of the reason you see such interest is they're safe republican districts. you win one republican primary and you're in the cat bird seat to hold on to a position in the house for years or decades if you want it. here we seeing some unusual, not just the power of trump's endorsement to elevate a candidate, but to lure candidates into the field and neither of these districts were candidates who trump chose to back even announced before his truth special post backing them. jimmy patronis saying he was in this race and randy fine who ran for the mike waltz seat responded to the endorsement by trump on fox news. >> when president trump was saved in butler, he was saved so he could save the world. when he said i thought i could help him, i knew i didn't have a choice. i'm proud to announce i'll be running for the 6th congressional dist
