garrett is right. the president elect earlier this week, he really threw his support behind johnson in that key endorsement. and look, this is being seen as a key test of party unity. and with his vote failing, could be viewed as a major blow to president elect trump. but i think what it really serves as a reminder, kate, is just how narrow this majority is in the house of representatives and just how challenging all of this will be for the incoming trump administration as it seeks to get its major priorities over the finish line over the next couple of months. as garrett mentioned, though, the more urgent priority is on monday. that's when congress is set to certify those presidential election results. and right now, we do not have a speaker. so we are trying to here or trying to find out, rather, whether president elect trump is burning up those phone lines, trying to talk to those members of congress to make sure that in this next round or in the next couple of hours, to not drag out this drama. the

i'm major garrett in for norah.th the intense search for the person or persons who authorities say helped a suspected terrorist pull off that horrific new year's attack in the heart of new orleans. just hours into the new year officials say the attacker flying an isis flag from a rented pickup truck, plowed into a crowd of revelers on bourbon street, killing at least 15 people, wounding dozens more. moments later, this assailant was killed in a gun battle with police that left two officers wounded. officials say explosives were found in the vehicle and other parts of the french quarter, a world-famous party district. the attacker has been identified as 42-year-old shamsud din jabbar, a u.s. army veteran from texas. officials do not believe he was acting alone and have asked the public's help in tracking down additional suspects. the attack happened less than a mile from the site of tonight's now-postponed college football playoff game. new orleans is also set to host the super bowl and mardi gras in the coming weeks

here now with the very latest from new orleans, garrett tenney is with us. garrett. >> yeah, tammy.the top priorities for investigators right now is determining whether or not jabbar acted alone in planning out or carrying out these attacks because, if he didn't, that would mean there would still be the possibility of additional attacks like the one we saw this morning. one update we-to-do have along those lines, in our reporting, is that investigators had been looking at surveillance video from earlier that showed three men and one woman, who appeared to be placing impro vialsed explosive devices around the french quarter. we are now told, sources telling our own david spunt, that police interviewed those four individuals and now believe they just were bystanders who happened to look suspicious. that being said, we do know bomb squads have searched the french quarter and detonated multiple i.e.d.s that were left in the area. also, right now in houston, houston, texas, just a few hours away, a swat team from the f.b.i. and local police have surround add house on the north side of th

garrett, let me do the big picture first. what stood out to you so far? obviously, an extraordinarily high stakes hearing today. did we hear anything that would change the minds of any of those senators who may have been on the fence? >> the request specifically? yeah. >> and, chris, with apologies, i'm standing just outside the door through which we think pete hegseth will exit in a few minutes. so if i've got my head on a swivel here a little bit, that's why you played that tim kaine exchange, which to me really was the pivotal exchange in this hearing. and it came, i believe, 11 senators in more than an hour into this hearing before i think democrats finally got their arms around how to go after pete hegseth, or how to at least try to expose some of the issues about his personal conduct and his background. that would be the things that would make republicans and republican senators uncomfortable enough with him not to vote for him, because at the end of the day, that is really the audience. if democrats think that they can prevent pete hegseth from bec
