nbc's reporter garrett haake has made his way to houston. what can we expect tomorrow night, buddy? >> reporter: we've got the first time we'll see all three front-runners at center stage. joe biden flanked on either side by more progressive rivals. i don't know whether we'll see fireworks between the three of them. all three campaigns are putting cold water on the idea they'll mix it up directly, throwing those verbal haymakers at each other. the lanes are still fairly separate. warren and sanders have been ideologically aligned, have not gone after each other yet. whether there's contrast here, it will be between biden's more pragmatic approach on a number of issues and warren and sanders calling for big structural change. you look at the democratic field and those three are, by and large, the leaders across the early states. when you look at texas, you see beto o'rourke and julian castro pulling away. it's possible they could have a home field advantage here. we know from recent polling that the issue most democrats are focused on right now is gun violence. that's something that

garrett haake is in odessa texas with the latest. good morning to you, garrett.alk about the most important thing here, the status of so many of these victims. >> reporter: hey, yasmine, good morning from odessa, texas. i'm standing in front of a hospital where most of the most severely injured patients were taken in the wake of that shooting on saturday. i can report now they still have ten patients here, one in critical condition, one in serious condition, and eight in fair condition. those conditions continue to get upgraded here since this shooting has ended. now, today, the focus is largely on the investigation here in texas. we know the identity of the shooter. we are still trying to understand much more about his motives. he's a 36-year-old white man, as you point out. we've been able to learn he was recently fired from his job. what we're not able to do definitively is connect the dots. was the firing any kind of motivation for the shooting? of course, the first person he shot was a texas peace officer, someone who had pulled him over in a traffic stop. t

nbc's garrett haake joins us now from odessa, texas.et's start with the gunman identified by law enforcement yesterday. what more do we know about him and how all of this played out? >> reporter: chris, the gunman is sort of a frustrating part of this investigation right now. we know a lot of individual pieces but not how they all fit together. for example, we do know that he was fired from his job recently. we have no idea whether that was part of the motivation for this crime. police also believe that the movie theater where all of this ended, the final shootout occurred, was in some way the destination of this suspect but we don't know why he was going there. was he targeting the movie theater specifically? was he looking for people inside of it? we know he was using an ar style weapon according to police but we don't know how he came to possess it. there were a number of things in his background which would have made it likely impossible to buy it legally. these are things the police and federal investigators who have been on the gr

i want to start with garrett haake in houston. what are you hearing about the folks inside the campaigns? it seems like team biden is fairly happy with how joe biden seemed to have done. >> reporter: i think that's right. not a lot of shake-up among the top three, although there are some lower polling candidates who punched up. as for team biden, they were very pleased with the front-runner's performance last night. they felt like he was punchy and engaged throughout. he got dinged a little bit in the debate for making reference to a record player. he also had a very modern meme worthy answer on health care earlier in the debate. the idea of she's with bernie, i'm with barack, comparing and contrasting his vision on health care with elizabeth warren's. it's probably the cleanest distillation of where his team and supporters want him to be. i think the strange of the night was the back and forth between biden and julian castro over health care specifically, but over who is essentially the better heir on the obama-biden legacy, the

garrett haake is with us from odessa, texas. >> reporter: yeah.t movie theater parking lot. you can see the mail truck the suspect hijacked that ended this scene here and this drama. the last place we know shoot og cured. no word from the police or city about who the suspect is or his motive. we have only the barest details about the suspect or the shooter in this case. white male in his 30s. matches the profile of so many other shooters in so many other cases we've covered. the fact that this started with a traffic stop. anyone who used routine traffic stop should be fined. police say there's no such thing as a routine traffic stop. officers approached this car and the man was apparently shooting out the back window at them. the first person shot in this case was a police officer. you have a rambled shootout scenario down the highway between midland and odessa that ended here with a shootout with police. we're several hundred miles from any major city here which means some of the assets pledged to help in this investigation are just arriving. we

msnbc's garrett haake joins us now from odessa, texas.opportunity to speak to a man who was wounded in the shooting. what did he tell you? >> reporter: i did, ali. i just met mark gonzales. he was driving home on saturday when he pulled up at a stoplight next to the shooter. he didn't think much of it until he looked over and saw the shooter's rifle pointed at him. if it's possible to describe someone who was hit twice by a bullet from an assault style weapon as lucky, that's mr. gonzales. he two bullets he was hit by went straight through his lower leg. didn't hit a bone. he's had a couple more surgeries to go. he was in incredibly positive spirits. i asked him to tell me about what was going through his mind and whether it changed his thinking at all about the gun debate. i think both of his answers are fascinating. take a listen. >> when i turned around again, i saw he was pointing that rifle at me. >> reporter: i can't even imagine what it's like to look up and see somebody pointing a rifle at you. >> it's a -- you can't believe it. i

joining us now from odessa is garrett haake.information from the suspect's background. >> reporter: he was not able to pass a background check. one of the opening questions that we still have here at this point is how did he get his hands on what we know is an ar-style weapon. it's also become increasingly clear from all the reporting that our team has been able to do here on the ground that this is someone that while it appears the approximate cause may have something to do with losing his job, he was spirlg down for quite a bit of time. that was one of the phrases used by the fbi. one of our producers went to his neighborhood and spoke to the suspect's neighbor. one of the neighbors said that the suspect had threatened her with his rifle sometime ago that she had called the police on him, that he was known to stand on his roof and shoot small animals, that that was what he was eating were animals that he could shoot from his home. these are obviously not activities of a well mental person. so i think as this continues to be in
