joining us now from capitol hill is ali vitali and with me is nbc news correspondent garrett haake. garrett, what's the deal they've settled on to avert this economic calamity? >> this was floated by mitch mcconnell yesterday. the deal is a $480 billion extension of the debt ceiling limit which democrats and republicans think they'll get to sometime in december. we'll have this entire conversation again in december. this removes pressure from democrats who were going to be forced to solve this on their own for now, it gives them more time to work on the president's agenda and republicans say it removes the excuse the democrats have been using which is to lift the debt ceiling on a long term basis through reconciliation would be too long, too difficult to do before this deadline. mcconnell says, we've given you more time, please do this now. >> politically how do democrats walk away from this by saying we're not playing on mcconnell's terms and how does mcconnell walk away from this and say he didn't blink? >> we're seeing the spin machine happen in both directions here, because mccon

nbc's senior capitol hill correspondent garrett haake has details on this. hey, garrett, good morning. >> reporter: hey, hoda, good morning. the house will vote to send this bill to the president's desk on tuesday. no drama expected there. but this is very much a temporary solution, which could mean we could be staring into another default crisis right in the lead-up to christmas >> on this vote the ayes are 50, the nays are 48. >> reporter: overnight on capitol hill, a debt debacle deferred senators passing a bill to lift the debt ceiling by $480 billion. the temporary move buying lawmakers nearly two months to come up with a longer term solution before the next default deadline in early december >> what is needed now is a long-term solution so we don't go through this risky drama every few months. >> reporter: the short-term solution proposed by republican leader mitch mcconnell breaks an impasse between the parties, with gop senators dropping for now their demands that democrats raise the nation's borrowing limit on their own through a lengthy process. >>

we have garrett haake.an paige, and former new york congressman and democratic congressional campaign chairman steven israel. on the senate side neither party is blining on the debt ceiling debate. the infrastructure bill and the social safety net spending bill through the house, at least as it relates to the top line number. >> the president has been remaining involved in these discussions and that has largely been helpful. he had a call with progressive members of the house and he talked about the top line spending number. everything seems to be moving in some direction. the general agreement is that no one is deciding yet if there is specific programs they want to cut. they are lowering the timing at leastholding and lowering the timing and how long it would last. that allows you to shrink the bottom line. and that setting up a cliff for future congresss. on the senate side we have been doing what we have been doing, trying to ring out as much information as we can about what would be acceptable to them

it is nbc news garrett haake that held a meeting with president obama, and she had another meeting with a guy named joe in the middle of this drama. congresswoman jayapal met for two hours with senator joe manchin. finally the two people who need to be in the same room fighting this out are in the same room fighting this out. senator manchin is one of two, count 'em, two, who has been blocking this thing, saying president biden's agenda shouldn't pass. he and kyrsten sinema of arizona want to shrink the president's bill t build back better bill. they want to strip out some of the provisions. they don't care if it's smaller or if they should cut different things. it depends how good the mood is on. >> it looks like it would match up to the president's agenda at all. "the new york times" reporting on friday that the core climate provisions in the bill were likely to be stripped out of it because of joe manchin's singular opposition to those. on sunday, yesterday, axios reported that senator manchin had come out with a whole new list of ways that he wanted to cut down the very popular chil

drama on capitol hill, kristin welker, welcome back, your first day back from maternity leave, garrett haake, phillip rutger, donna edwards and brandon buck. so, walk us through what you're expecting later this evening when the january 6th committee gavels into session. what do we know? >> it will be straight forward. they're going to meet around 7:30. there is no reason to think this vote tonight won't unanimous. they're voting to recommend holding bannon in contempt. he says he is covered by former president trump on executive privilege and the committee thinks they can win out on all of that and they're going to move out quickly. the full house would have to act. that could be as soon as this week. and only then would this be referred to doj for a criminal prosecution. the point here, the house says, is they want to move quickly. they don't want to be caught waiting around for courts to act or in a long negotiation back and forth, they want to press ahead. >> first they have to get the d.o.j., merrick garland, to agree to proceed. then they have to go to the courts, get a grand jury conve

bring in nbc news senior capitol hill correspondent garrett haake. democrats seem to be receptive for the plan proposed by mitch mcconnell but it appears to just kick the can down the road by a couple of months where this massive question and the prospect of using reconciliation will be back on the table? >> yeah. make no mistake this was mitch mcconnell blinking a little bit allowing to are more time. earen if the deal comes together i think it will, it's a punt. moves the fight to december. mcconnell propose add two-part deal. get out of the way until december and then mcconnell says democrats will be expected to do all the heavy lifting through reconciliation at that time. democrats turned around and said, thanks for the first part of your offer. we'll go ahead and ignore the second part on the reconciliation piece. looks like we're going to have this entire fight all over again in december, with a slightly altered set of facts, altered timeline but could be potentially in a situation in december with the debt ceiling coming up, government funding

describing that scene there, i want to bring in garrett haake who is a native texan. he lived in worked in that area in is mans field outside of articlingson, right? >> yes, this is the sound end, and i think part of the reason you're going to see the kind of robust response here is the overlap here if is right in the middle of the dallas and ft. worth area. the independent school district will have their own police force. this is pretty classic suburbia and you see that reflected even in the pictures that we're seeing. this is a school campus that is about 75 acres. that can be part of the challenge now i think for law enforcement. they may think they have a good handle on this here, but you're looking at a chool that is a campus. and it is also on a pretty significant sized highway. it is just an enormous space, and that will be part of the channel for law enforcement. >>. >> we popped up another box on your screen, bottom right. you see those appearing to gather there. we have not gotten any cord of a news conference or an official update, but it looks like they're
