garrett haake moment in was saying that the campaign absolutely has plans. they have only been in this position the last 11 days, what can you tell us, yamiche ? >> i talked to a number of aides this morning, especially one this morning, that person was close to the thinking of the media engagement for vice president harris, in touch with her daily and directly, her and tim walz want to do a joint interview in the next few weeks, it might be before the democratic national convention, this person said that it was not likely going to be before the dnc, likely after. it is still a possibility. they also want to do not just national media and local media, traditional media, they want to be in charge and talk to people in social media as influencers on places like tiktok and snapchatted. the things i'm hearing, a lot of stuff going on the last two weeks. first, she had to pick a running mate and go out and to find herself on the campaign trail. once they were together this week, her and tim walz have been on the road for the most part going through the battlegrou

let's discuss the trump campaign strategy with nbc news correspondent garrett haake. garrett, in the last couple of weeks, since harris stepped in, democrats' poll numbers and chances of holding the white house seem to have rebounded. is former president trump rattled by this changeup? >> ana, on the one hand, the trump campaign said the minute harris got in in a memo they knew her numbers were going to be better than joe biden's, and they predicted a honeymoon with the press. they did expect the race would tighten to a degree. i also think the person of donald trump, not the campaign of donald trump, his behavior over the last couple of weeks suggested that he is a little bit rattled. he's complained about having to start over in his campaign, complained about the coverage harris gets in the media, and complained about her crowd sizes relative to his. i think this moment, whether it's a significant, long-lasting change in the momentum of this race or a boomlet for the vice president is ruffling the feathers of donald trump the person so far. we will see whether his ca

joining me now is garrett haake in michigan. garrett, how is vance pitching himself to voters?teresting exchange with him this morning. talk to me about that. >> reporter: i would agree with that. vance is on message. we were at a police station. he was focused on crime and on immigration and linking those issues together. a bread and butter issue for the trump campaign and the republican ticket. he was on the attack against vice president harris and to a lesser degree her new running mate tim walz on a host of issues, including introducing a new issue, something about walz's service in the national guard and whether he left his unit before it deployed. i took an opportunity in the q&a portion to ask him about comments he made suggesting that perhaps if not the only, the most important reason that josh shapiro was not put on the democratic ticket was that he was jewish. i asked him whether he had any evidence to support that claim, given the fact that kamala harris is married to a jewish man. here is part of his response. >> i have suggested that kamala harris was motivated or

joining me senior political editor mark murray and nbc news correspondent garrett haake, covering the trump campaign. mark, what are weseeing in these numbers? is favorability the big differential there's an overall, you know, feeling of momentum and excitement on her side compared to joe biden. >> we've seen the horse race numbers change, but they're still within the margin of error and show a very competitive race and we've seen independents that harris is doing better than joe biden did in previous "new york times" siena polling the biggest change are the numbers you mentioned where joe biden was a minus 20 favorability net rating in pennsylvania right after that july debate. now it's harris plus 2 that's a 22-point shift. that is a humongous and very important shift in all of our polling because we've ended up seeing the totality of the biden-trump race both candidates were below water now all of a sudden, we have for the first time see one that is above water and i think that is important, but andrea, it's important to note does this sustain? is this durable? we don't know the an

. >> joining us now, nbc's garrett haake who covers the trump campaign for us. communications director, republican strategist, doug hie, and cnbc analyst, ron insana. calling it his cottage reminds me of a small million dollar loan. talk to me about what he talked about yesterday. did he talk much about the economy? >> reporter: he talked about prices and inflation, which his campaign believes is a more tactile thing than the economy broadly. donald trump likes to talk about the stock market. that's not something most people pay day-to-day attention to. but they pay day-to-day attention to their grocery prices and that's why he was surrounded by props yesterday. this has been the struggle for the campaign. they can put structure around him and try and keep him focused on one particular issue. donald trump is going to talk about what donald trump wants to talk about, especially at an event like that. he did hit on the economic message that his campaign hopes will resonate with people fed up with high grocery prices, high gas prices. he wanted to play the field on

garrett haake has that part of our coverage. what is donald trump saying now? >> the trump vance ticket are crisscrossing the country. yesterday it was a economy. today, it's crime and safety. as the often the case with trump, they can put him in a box about what he is supposed to talk about but if he takes questions, he'll talk about what he sees fit. he is defending his use of personal attacks against harris as necessary in his view to win this election. in an interview he taped last night. let's listen. >> our country needs a very smart person and i don't think she's a very smart person. >> why do you think that? >> i don't consider that an insult. it's a fact. i looked at the way she deals, her crazy record. i look at her policies. i just don't happen to think so. now, i could say she is and that would be very nice. the other thing, we have to win this election. >> this is just classic donald trump. he's going to have advisers inside of his campaign and out of it telling him one thing, but he believes his gut and it tells him to go negative against kamala h
