surprisingly competitive race in mississippi, gop senator cindy hyde-smith won the runoff solidifying her seat. it's 53-47. with me now, msnbc garrett on capitol hill. we should learn the results of the pelosi vote very soon. tell me what's going on in the house leadership vote. >> reporter: house democrats moved to a second closed door meeting of the day. they are counting the votes for nancy pelosi to become their candidate for speaker of the house. it's a foregone conclusion she will win this vote today. she's running unopposed to be the democratic nominee for this spot but it doesn't mean she has the speakership locked up. some of her opponents from within the democratic party said they met with leader pelosi around 12:30. they spoke to her about putting some sort of transition plan in place for the time in which she may not be the speaker any more and came away empty handed. you got some of these democratic rebels if you will that they will still oppose pelosi on the floor despite the fact that it's all but certain as soon as these votes are tallied pelosi will be the nominee and favorite to get that title come january. >> and
