garvin thomas rejoins us from the host city. what are we going to see, garvin?> reporter: well, i'll tell you what we're seeing right now. you see the folks there walking behind us, they're heading to the stadium for the opening ceremony, which will begun in just a couple of hours. one thing they'll see, a lot of fireworks. you see those things in the river? we are told there are five different fireworks displays happening. team usa's uniform is going to help keep our athletes warm. they come with built-in heaters. the athletes we know, of course, are excited. but the people here in pyeongchang, they're pretty thrilled, too. this normally sleepy town of 40,000 people has come alive tonight. the population will more than double in size by the start of the opening ceremony and the pyeongchang olympic stadium. and that, not even counting the hundreds of police and other security personnel roaming the streets, their overwhelming presence, not dampening the enthusiasm for those who have come from around korea and around the world. >> we're very, very happy. >> it's s

this is our final morning with garvin thomas live in south korea. >> i know.n, you've been doing such a great job working so hard on behalf of nbc bay area but luckily you took some time to have a little bit of fun. >> reporter: that's right, laura and marcus. it has -- the entire thing has been fun, but you're right, hard work, robbie and i did so the counting, 20 days we've been to 15 medal events that we saw in person, we've walked a lot, 161 miles, more than 325,000 steps and 50 live shots covering these olympics. we did have a few hours earlier tonight to see something new and we had not yet seen speed skating or curling because those were two events where we didn't have any northern california athletes. we took a couple hours and visited both those. the speed skating venue was great, we got to see a south korean athlete take the bronze and then the curling, we went to as well and again the home team, south korea beat japan in the semi-final of curling so they are on to the gold medal event, just two more wonderful events out of all these events. i must s

garvin thomas joins us live in south korea. >> garvin, you talked to karen chen overnight. first, though, a different group of american athletes made history less than three hours ago. >> reporter: that's right. marcus, you know, there has been a lot of talk at these games about the lack of medals that team u.s.a. has been winning. well, we just pulled a gold out overnight from the most unexpected of places. how unexpected? well, the united states had never won a gold medal in the sport of cross-country. well, that is until now. the women's team sprint competition came down to the wire. will m a photo finish with the u.s. team of jesse diggins and keeken randall pulling it off. a medal might be out of reach for karen chen after the short program in the women's figure skating. the 18-year-old is in tenth place. all three americans stumbled during their program, chen having trouble with her opening combination, one she said she nailed every single day of practice this week. >> to not be able to do that there and open my program with that, i was definitely a little disappointe

our garvin thomas was watching that event. he was in the stands with her husband who is from hayward. >> and, garvin, tell us all about that. >> reporter: well, the event here just got over but i have to tell you about another event that just ended within the last hour, another medal for the u.s. a bronze in women's team pursuit speed skating, the first speed skating medal for the women, team u.s.a. women in the past 16 years. back to the sliding center which in my opinion has the best finish line in all the olympic games. the fans, the athletes, the finish line all right on top of each other and when a competition finishes it is bedlam. and it was just a few minutes ago. let me set the stage for you, going into the final heat elena meyers taylor was in second place in the women's two man bobsled just 0.04 of a second out of first. she did a terrific run on her fourth heat, finished in first place, all she had to do was wait for the final sled, the germans, to see how they would do. well, they did her one better. the germans e

garvin, i was nervous for you. i understand you just got back from the dmz that separates the two countries. how did it feel to be in one of the most volatile places in the world? >> reporter: well, laura and marcus, when people often describe a place as one of a kind often they are exaggerating, but when you get to the dmz that's not an exaggeration, this is like no other place in the world. we arrived in the country on saturday, have spent a few days getting to know the lay of the land an here at the olympic plaza, for example, learning where all the venues are, the one with the colorful lights that's where the short track speed skating and figure skating will be. yesterday we were in a very different place. nbc organized a tour for reporters and photographers to go to the dmz, that's the two and a half mile wide stretch of land that separates north and south korea, the most militarized border in all the world. there is only one place in all of that where the fence opens up and that's the joint security area just

"today in the bay's" garvin thomas joins us live. a bay area athlete competed. >> reporter: that's right. not only did she compete but she did very well. the goal of every athlete is to win a medal, of course, but not winning a medal doesn't necessarily count as a loss. that was the case for two local athletes who competed here and held their own in pyeongchang. bryce bennett skied the men's downhill race, finished in 16th place which the downhill is an event where experience counts for a lot so for a 25-year-old in his first olympic games this is a good result. bryce told me right after the run that standing in the starting gate for the olympic downhill after years of hard work felt pretty darned great and he believes this experience was one he needed in order to do even better in the future. >> what i took away from this experience you have to have all your ducks in a row and have everything in your career lined up and in place so when this day comes and when it does come you can execute. >> reporter: execute is just what palo alto

garvin thomas has been working while we were all sleeping. one athlete that we have been watching took part in for qualifying heats overnight. >> really a disappointing few hours for nick cunningham. >> reporter: that's right, marcus and laura. i just spoke with him within the past hour when he walked off the track after his third run, he looked at me, laughed and said he was hoping he wouldn't see me until after the fourth run tonight but his times weren't good enough, he didn't qualify for that last run. now, nick cunningham and his brake hand had a keen sabor dug themselves such a dig time hole that not even their fastest run in the third run could help them out. i asked nick what it was like going to bed after those first two runs knowing he had no chance but still had to wake up the next day and still compete. >> when you have a bad race you have to forget about it and nobody taught me that more than steve holcomb. i tried to take a page out of his book and let it go. z it's a new day, i can't change anything so to go into today i had to
