this is our final morning with garvin thomas live in south korea. >> i know.n, you've been doing such a great job working so hard on behalf of nbc bay area but luckily you took some time to have a little bit of fun. >> reporter: that's right, laura and marcus. it has -- the entire thing has been fun, but you're right, hard work, robbie and i did so the counting, 20 days we've been to 15 medal events that we saw in person, we've walked a lot, 161 miles, more than 325,000 steps and 50 live shots covering these olympics. we did have a few hours earlier tonight to see something new and we had not yet seen speed skating or curling because those were two events where we didn't have any northern california athletes. we took a couple hours and visited both those. the speed skating venue was great, we got to see a south korean athlete take the bronze and then the curling, we went to as well and again the home team, south korea beat japan in the semi-final of curling so they are on to the gold medal event, just two more wonderful events out of all these events. i must s

"today in the bay's" garvin thomas joins us live. a bay area athlete competed. >> reporter: that's right. not only did she compete but she did very well. the goal of every athlete is to win a medal, of course, but not winning a medal doesn't necessarily count as a loss. that was the case for two local athletes who competed here and held their own in pyeongchang. bryce bennett skied the men's downhill race, finished in 16th place which the downhill is an event where experience counts for a lot so for a 25-year-old in his first olympic games this is a good result. bryce told me right after the run that standing in the starting gate for the olympic downhill after years of hard work felt pretty darned great and he believes this experience was one he needed in order to do even better in the future. >> what i took away from this experience you have to have all your ducks in a row and have everything in your career lined up and in place so when this day comes and when it does come you can execute. >> reporter: execute is just what palo alto
