garvin thomas joins us now with the story of a south bay woman who did just that in spite of the risks> that's right. lydia sanchez was not always a runner. it wasn't until a partner's mother was diagnosed with leukemia olive justarted running seriously to donate to cancer research. she's always been the type of person to help those in need, but recently she took that to a whole other level. for those of you who are not avid runners, 10 kilometers or a little over 6 miles might seem like a long distance to run, but for lydia sanchez up until about a year ago, well, it was no big deal. >> say 10k, that's a practice run. you know, those are practice runs. >> reporter: running in this year's rock and roll series 10k in san jose, however, was a very big deal. not just for lydia who did it, but her mom alive to see it. >> there's no words for it. >> reporter: lydia started running seriously in 2006 when her partner's mother was diagnosed with leukemia. as part of team in training lydia participated in countless marathons and later triathlons and ultramarathons, all along the way raising man

let's check in with garvin thomas with this week's bay area proud. >> reporter: now that we're getting wanted to share a story about a san jose man who goes way above and way beyond to bring his neighborhood together this time of year. more than 20 years ago bob started making small haunted house experiences for a fall festival. he then moved the operation to his front yard where each year he builds the amazingly elaborate multistory haunted structures. each year a different theme. trust me, you have to see what bob and his volunteers create. bob has always done it because he says it brings his enabled
