our garvin thomas joins us. garvin, how is it going out there? >> reporter: it's going pretty well. audrey, right at this very moment they're switching over the equipment. i learn something today, they call it podium training because the apparatus are up on podiums for a competition like this, and it's different at each competition. the athletes need to get time to get used to the equipment and make sure they are ready to be at their best when the actual competition starts. important, this i olympic qualifier, audrey, but it is still super important because doing well at this competition could land you on the national team, on the world team, and that will get you a whole bunch of experience and access to training and coaches and stuff that get you ready for the next year's national championships when those are set for the olympics as well. >> it's a very important step to the ultimate goal for sure, garvin. i understand that the focus is on the men today. i'm wondering, are there any local ties? >> reporter: audrey, there's nothing but local ties in the men's competition. right now

i'm garvin thomas. >> and i'm jessica aguirre. fbi agents busy arresting nearly a dozen bay area police officers for crimes ranging from violation of civil rights to obstruction of justice. >> they all worked for either the pittsburg or antioch police departments. velena joining us with the whole story. >> reporter: this raid started around 5:00 a.m. this morning. this stems from a two-year-long investigation into current and former members of both the antioch and pittsburg police departments. some of the officers were here and spent the majority of the day inside the federal courthouse. a total of nine suspects have been arrested. this is a result of four different indictments. today seven of them were in court for their arraignment. the charges include conspiracy to distribute narcotics,

i'm jessica aguirre. >> and i'm garvin thomas. san francisco is looking into two crashes involving self-driving cars in the city that happened less than two hours apart and one involved a self-driving car and a fire truck racing to an emergency. as sergio quintana explains, the crash came long after the city asked state regulators to rein in the number of cars allowed to operate there. >> reporter: you can see the cruise vehicle in the middle of the intersection. according to cruise, it was in self-driving mode and the only person in the car was the passenger. san francisco police say after the collision that person was rushed to a local hospital with minor injuries. the cell phone video shows the fire truck was headed south in the opposite lane of traffic with lights and sirens on when it collided with the cruise vehicle in the intersection. cruise says their you a thon mouse vehicle had the green light and was making the turn. the fire truck had lights and sirens on en route to a call but

garvin thomas live at the shark tank. what's going on down there? >> the competition may begin tomorrow, but the eyes of the gymnastics world right now are on what's going on behind that curtain. simone biles is making her return to the u.s. national championships this year. we have video we shot just within the last few minutes of simone biles taking the floor here at sap center. many of you don't need reminding, but why this is a big deal, if you need a refresh, seven national titles, four olympic gold medals. after struggling in tokyo in 2021, biles stepped away, only returning last month. of course, winning that competition going away. she is a heavy favorite this weekend. the reigning olympic all-around gold medalist suni lee is here. she's had her own struggles, recently coming back from kidney injury. she'll only be taking part in two events and not the all-around. we asked the head of usa gymnastics what it meant to the sport to have biles in this competition. >> it's been incredible to have simone back. we are so excited. not only to have h

garvin thomas was on the arena floor tonight giving us a great view with all of the pictures. you were there for the chronic of a new all-around national champion with local ties, right? >> that is right. one out of every five may compete at the u.s. national championships street:stanford. singling out sure would have been the best thing. a freshman was the runner-up at the collegiate championship. do once library? a little unsteady on the first two apparatuses falling third and the all-around after a floor exercise but then he turned it around. by the time the last rotation came on parallel bars, he knew all he had to do was to his routine like he had done 1000 times practicing and he would win. that is just what he did. >> it is really exciting. i have done a lot of hard work in the jim . next few weeks, if i am selected for the world team, i will go back and work just as hard to perform at the world and hopefully get the team on the podium. >> it doesn't surprise me that he ended up on top. we still have a lot of work to do to be as competitive internationally. he knows tha
