thanks, garvin. >> like a cliffhanger. still a mystery. >>> weather. we had more wildfire activity to the north today. that's why conditions were so smoggy out there. in fact, i have a look at really what you're not able to see right now. some updated chances for rainfall. and look at this view here. this is -- come to your tv to check this out. this is our oakland camera. normally the downtown skyline is right here. the camera is having a hard time focusing because we're getting that smog and particulate matter moving in. again this really underscores the point here that the worst air quality right now is from oakland to san francisco. some real-time monitoring sites putting it in the range of 150 to 205 aqi. when you get above 150 you're in unhealthy and also very unhealthy, so oakland to san francisco, you certainly need to limit your outdoor exposure even if you don't have any respiratory problems right now, again, because of that increased wildfire activity to the north. so the smoke forecast and where we're seeing the fires, it looks like this. i

our garvin thomas joins us with a story about beauty coming out of tragedy. >> janelle, jessica, core by shaw is a graphic designer by profession, an artist by birth. she said through out her life she could always count on art to give herself a rest from real world worry. never more true than when her son was diagnosed with cancer. art made the ordeal a little less horrible. it did it for her. for 15 years it's been doing the same for others. >> reporter: there are times when a beautiful act of kindness has its origins in a tragic turn of events. such is how core by shaw came to start kids and art. it's a story almost two decades old. every detail of which corby can still remember, although she wishes otherwise. >> thanksgiving of 2005 he was 3 years old. >>ter: it begins with her son ahmed being diagnosed with leukemia. what followed were six years of hope and disappointment, of recovery and relapse and way too much time spent in a hospital. >> reporter:. >> so we just ended up spending so much time in the waiting room. >> reporter: she turned to her love of art as a way to transform

the person who is our front man garvin thomas hosting his seventh annual bay area proud blood drive. he is there every year. doctors say the need is high because there aren't any school drives, which are a big source of donations. more than 100 people stepped up to donate. that includes 20 first-time donors. >> i wanted to give because it is an important thing for all of us to do. it is something we can do that's free for us, but it really makes an incredible impact. >> today's drive collected enough blood to help more than 200 patients. 60% of stanford blood center donations come from drives like this right here. if you miss today's drive, you can donate at your local red cross or any blood donation centers. >> okay. it is almost flu season and one health care season decided to get ahead of it. kaiser held a flu clinic to give employees a boost before flu season which starts in october. the vaccine takes two weeks to get in effect. doctors recommend you get it as soon as possible. >> it is god to get a flu vaccine before the season starts. we have started seeing some flu, the diseas
