garvin thomas has new information. do you know if the suspect resisted arrest at the border this afternoon? >> reporter: according to the san diego police, diane, he did not. that is a serious question considering what barrientos is accused of doing when police tried to arrest him here. when they picked him up in a parking lot near the border crossing, barrientos was armed and there was another man, another male, in the car with him. the fact they were able to take him into custody without further violence is a good thing all around for law enforcement. we believe they knew he was in the area, headed towards mexico. earlier in the day we heard the department of justice and san diego police had been tracking barrientos' cell phone signal. that what led them to believe he was headed to southern california presumably to cross into mexico. san diego police got a heads up. one officer alertly kept an eye out. he saw barrientos pull into a parking lot. heas able to arrest him without any further violence. diane. >> garvin, t

nbc bay area garvin thomas shows us how he failed to escape this time. >> reporter: police, of course, take the investigation into any shooting where somebody is seriously hurt very seriously. but when the victim is another police officer, it appears there is an extra intensity to the search for the shooter. in the case of andrew barrientos, it involved not just the oakland and fremont police, but police in san diego. the chp, department of justice, and ultimately needed to help of the u.s. border patrol. >>> according to police, it took andrew barrientos exactly almost 24 hours to travel almost exactly 500 miles. from the mini mart at 86th and bancroft, where he allegedly shot officer todd young, to just this side of the mexican border. but if barrientos' ultimate goal was indeed to cross into mexico, he came up just a few feet short. >> everyone was on alert for this guy. >> reporter: oakland police say they had law enforcement up and down the state looking for barrientos. according to san diego police, the fugitive's cell phone signal was being tracked. that is how police knew he h

live from oakland, garvin thomas. >> thank you, garvin.we want to head to san diego to a reporter who spent much of the evening at the border crossing where the arrest happened. can you fill us in where the arrest happened? >> reporter: the arrest happened at a parking lot that sits right next to the border. during the investigation the border was shut down. you have basically a traffic jam at the border. the officer who made the arrest noted there was a backup at the border, he suspected barrientos was not going to want to cross the border through his car and try to get to mexico by foot and guess what, that is exactly what happened. >> so he found him in the parking lot. was he getting out to try to head where you can cross by foot? >> reporter: what is interesting and this is great police work the officer spotted barrientos in the passenger seat of the car that drove by. there are thousands upon thousands of people who cross every day. this officer all he had was a photo of barrientos and was able to spot him through that crowd. >> ther

i'm garvin thomas. diane dwier is off. a quiet danville neighborhood erupted in chaos this morning as an apparent drunk driver went on a rampage hitting a bicyclist, a pedestrian and several vehicles. the driver said to be a young man in his late teens or early 20s hit a bicyclist. witnesses say then the driver proceeded to hit a pedestrian. a pedestrian crossing sign and several vehicles. despite the fact the driver's air bag deployed, he continued on his rampage. that's when neighbors band together to stop the driver. one man blocked the street with his truck. when the driver did eventually stop, several people wrestled him to the ground and held him down until police arrived. >> to see a man blocked the street here with his truck and then the kid came back down the street in the red truck and, of course, stopped because he couldn't get through. and just, you know, a bunch of neighbors got around him and got him out of the car and sort of held him until the police came. >> now we understand none of those hurt suffered li

i'm garvin thomas in for diane dwyer. a 40-year-old san francisco man is struggling to survive after being robbed and stabbed at a popular park in the city. what makes this story more disturbing is the number of attackers police say may have been involved. as many as a dozen may have been involved. monty francis is live at the park with the latest on the investigation. monty? >> reporter: garvin, people who live near dolores park say they were not shocked to learn of the near fatal stabbing. this is just the latest episode of violence. a san francisco man was crossing through dolores park around 1:30 in the morning. as he reached this bridge near 19th and church streets, police say a group of 12 men, under the age of 21 beat the man and stabbed him several times in the abdomen before taking off with his backpack. the 40-year-old asian man was rushed to san francisco general hospital if life-threatening injuries. >> they were swabs and gathering evidence. >> reporter: officers detained seven people and placed three of them

i'm garvin thomas in for diane dwyer. an apparent drunk driver goes on a rampage hitting a bicyclist, a pedestrian and several vehicles. it doesn't stop until witnesses pitch in and help stop the driver. nbc bay area's monty france sis live at police headquarters in danville with the incredible story. monty? >> reporter: we just heard from police. the good news is that no one was seriously hurt. but that driver did quite a bit of damage and terrified people in a usually quiet danville neighborhood earlier today. now it all unfolded about 10:00 this morning. the driver identified at 23-year-old canaan sheer holes was behind the wheel of a red pickup truck. he exited 680 and when he reached the intersection of el cero and danville boulevard, he hit a bicycle in the bike lane. he proceeded down danville boulevard hitting a pedestrian, a light pole and at least two vehicles. despite the fact his air bag deployed, he continues on his rampage when neighbors apparently banded together to stop him. we're told by a witness that on

i'm garvin thomas, he is craig herrera.e has the chilly details. >> you saw the cloud cover in oakland all over the bay area waking up to, taking a while to burn it off. in the 50s, not only the beaches. livermore, fairfield, over to san jose at the airport a 60 there but lots of cloud cover. the wind from the northwest at 7 to 10 miles per hour. looking at fairfield across the tri-valley we have gusty winds getting pulled into the central valley. we're running about the same as this time yesterday and that fog is going to be with us most of this morning through the afternoon. some sunshine, bayside and inland. only 70s and 80s for afternoon highs. we'll enjoy the sunshine if you go to the giants game, a little bit of sunshine. a little breeze going on as well. but that's at 1:10. along the coast 50s and 60s. you'll need the layers again today. >> thank you. here are three words that strike fear in many kids -- school starts monday. it does at least in the san jose unified district. it's a safe bet no one has been busier ge

garvin thomas sent the picture. 107 degrees. inside the incar temperature. >>> the heat is taking a toll on mass transit. caltrans delayed in part because trains cannot hit the top speed of 70 miles an hour. because of heat restrictions. northbound trains expected to be 40 minutes late. the heat is slowing down b.a.r.t. trains are running up to 20 minutes late because the heat is affecting system computers. trains hatch slowed from 75 miles an hour to as low as 25 in some areas. the delays are said to be system wide. be prepared for delays on b.a.r.t. because of intense heat tonight. >>> talking about is all afternoon. hot everywhere in the east bay where the fire is burning. nbc bay area's cheryl hurd is in walnut creek, not far from clayton. you can actually see some of the smoke up in the hills. >> we can, jessica. you can see the fire from the vantage point where we are in walnut creek. as you can see, there is a lot more smoke than i showed you about an hour ago. meanwhile, we are here, near a very popular park. heather far

in san rafael, garvin thomas, nbc bay area news. >> good luck to him. >> have to be resourceful. >> totally jeff, lovely day. getting warmer much. >> here is a picture of the golden gate bridge. for those in san francisco, hopefully you got to enjoy some of that sunshine. it's i been a long time coming three weeks now and counting of this cooler than average weather. just in case you didn't know, you didn't see the past couple of days, we've been keeping track of this cold weather. redwood city, monthly average of 76.8. the old record in 1993. it's been decade since records that low lasting this long. as you put that into motion, there is the fog coming back in that last frame. we've got about five to six hours of warming and with that fog clearing earlier today, it did help our inland spots to get in on some heat. holding on to 78. 71 in gilroy. already down to 56 in san francisco as we could have temperatures near the upper 40s for parts of the coastal regions tonight. another chilly night on tap in this unseasonably cool summer. not too many complaints out there as we start off saturday,
