i'm garvin thomas. diane dwyer has the night off. we begin tonight in the east bay are where it was a cold, blustery morning for first lady michelle obama. she was taking part in the commissioning ceremony of a coast guard cutter. the ceremony marks the formal introduction of the state-of-the-art vessel to the coast guard's active fleet. kimberly braved the rain and wind and brings us the highlights. >> reporter: the coast guard cutter will be base d with its first mission to begin in mid-april. it was a long wait for hundreds of people in the rain and wind to see first lady michelle obama at the commissioning ceremony for the national security cutter "stratton." >> oh, my gosh, absolutely amazing. oh, my gosh. it's such an honor to be here. >> reporter: the first lady's escort wasn't spared the force of mother nature. once at the podium, michelle obama spent much of her time thanking the coast guard and their families. >> no matter what this country asks of you, you always step up to answer the call. always. so it is fitting that al

i'm garvin thomas. we begin in the south bay where hundreds of volunteers in nasty weather to help search for sierra lamar. in addition to covering new ground, the search also got some star power. monty francis is live in morgan hill with the latest. >> reporter: garvin, good evening. it has been 15 days since sierra lamar vanished. since the days go on, her parents say it only gets more difficult. thanks to hundreds of volunteers, they haven't given up hope of finding her alive. most of sierra lamar's friends are too young to meet the age requirement of 18 to it take part in a search for the missing morgan hill teen. so they organized a march, and in the rain they took their message to the streets. >> bring sierra home! bring sierra home! >> reporter: among them was a girl about sierra's age who also shares her first name. >> i just want her to come back and i want people to pray for her and miss her like i do and my mom does. >> reporter: meanwhile, 49ers quarterback alex smith and his wife were among

i'm garvin thomas. john and marla are off today. now to our developing news from the east bay. police say they have found the weapon they believe was used in the murders of seven people at an oakland school monday. we go live to oakland where the break in the case came early this morning. >> reporter: good morning to you. about 5:00 this morning police do think they found the gun used in the killing spree less than a mile from where we're standing and not exactly where they were looking earlier off of do little. meantime, there is a banner of hope that was placed in front of the school this morning with the names of all seven vicms on it. that 45 semiautomatic was found near lee drive at hagenburger road, a place called san leandro creek. this would be a side road that you could take to get to alameda where the suspect one l. goh surrendered. police say the serial number appears to match the one that he bought. this morning students came back to oikos university. some said prayers out front near a memorial here by the street. a police car no longer here. they just have tape out
