nbc bay area's garvin thomas joins us with the story. >> the name of joe caps' charitable organizations a little different. it's called, what do you want to be. he felt he had an answer to that. quarterback. he feels many head down the wrong path because no one showed them the right one. many years ago he started doing just that, and has kept on doing it. his good work is our bay area proud. you don't get sent to the correctional training facility in sole dad without having a record. everyone on the inside got one. on this day, though, there is one record out there on the yard that stands out among all the rest -- one of a very different kind. the most touchdowns ever thrown in an nfl game. >> seven in one game. the baltimore colts, you heard of them? >> reporter: the record and the sense of humor both belong to joe kapp. joe was a bay area sports legend with a history six decades deep. in 1959, the all-american quarterback went to the rose bowl. in '64 he won canadian football's gray cup and led the vikings to super bowl 4. in the # '80s, he became cal's football coach. even as recent

garvin thomas is here with bay area proud, the story of one man who said his chance to volunteer is one way to give back to the sport he loves. >> scott burns is actually the volunteer captain for the equipment changeover. men and women gymnasts don't all use the same apparatus. somebody's got to switch it over between sessions, sometimes four times a day. scott is thrilled to be doing it. one example of volunteers all doing the bay area proud. it is less than a mile, as the crow flies, from the pits of the california sports center to center stage at hp pavilion. to walk it would take these kids less than 20 minutes. to earn it, might take more like 20 years. more than likely, though, gymnastics will lapped them somewhere in between. just like it did their coach, scott burns. >> i started tumbling from a really young age. >> reporter: scott grew up a gymnast in l.a. even though he didn't make it to the olympic trials, he was good enough to make the team at the air force academy. >> that was good. >> reporter: still, it wasn't until leaving the sport for a few years, he realized how much

. >>> good evening, everyone, i'm garvin thomas. former penn state assistant football coach jerry sandusky spent the first full day of what will likely be the rest of his days behind bars, he was convicted last night on dozens of criminal counts connected to the abuse of ten young bays. brian mooar joins us live from pennsylvania with the latest, brian? >> reporter: garvin, in this community there is a sense of relief but also an acknowledgement that a verdict like this cannot heal the wounds. as jerry sandusky was pronounced guilty of 45 of 48 criminal counts, one of the jurors said he knew he made the right decision. >> just the look on his face, no real emotion, just kind of accepting, you know, because he knew it was true. >> reporter: when the verdict was announced, a community that had once applauded sandusky's victories, cheered his downfall. he was led off in cuffs to face a minimum 60 years, a maximum of more than 400 behind bars. >> essentially the sentence that jerry will receive will be a life sentence. >> reporter: for
