garvin thomas has the story that will make you bay area proud. >> reporter: to tell the story of the saving of jack london state historic park, one needs to start on a horse. one that, in the late 1980s, carried chuck levine on his first visit to the park, on his second date, with his future wife. >> i remember the trail up to the lake was a beautiful trail. i remember the historic buildings and being amazed at the architecture. >> reporter: it was the beginning, it turns out, of two long-term relationships. chuck eventually retiring from a high-flying career in the telecommunications industry to a home right next to the park. >> we spent a tremendous amount of time in the park. i'm probably in the park at least four or five days a week. when i'm in town probably seven days a week i'm in the park. >> reporter: jack became a member of the valley of the moon natural history association. a friends of the park, if you will. although when news hit in 2011 that jack london was one of 70 parks the state planned to shut for budget reasons, the park needed more than just a friend. >> there wa

garvin thomas has it in tonight's bay area proud. >> reporter: if you were to write up totally honestat laura graham and her mother sue spend hours every week doing down here. >> what do we have? >> reporter: appraising, folding, categorizing the thousands of clothes that come to them through laura's nonprofit, 1 closet. all the product of a decision the 16-year-old girl made a couple of years ago, one she'll admit she didn't think through all the way. >> i didn't think it was going to become this big. i didn't think i would be doing introduce and doing all this stuff and winning awards. >> reporter: in part laura says because all she had in mind back then was a single clothing drive. her goal, reach out to other teens and ask them for the clothes they no longer wear for children in foster care and group homes, children who would desperately love to wear something new. >> they just want to go to school and not be singled out because they don't have tattered clothes every day. they tell me. they tell me how excited they are and just the joy they're filled with the next few days when th

here with an update with some of the people profiled is garvin thomas. >> the series grew out of a conversationne we had been having with our viewers for years. why so much bad news? why are all the stories of good (t&háhp &hc& they are out there, from remarkable teachers to volunteers, we found 100 of them so far. many whose good work keeps getting better. >> it started with a single solid but gentle tap on my shoulder, a single tap, and i knew it was too solid to be human. >> that was bryant austin describing his first encounter with a humpback whale. upclose photographs of whales to create life-sized portraits of them. his hope was seeing these creatures on this stale could move people to be more protective of their habitat. since our story aired, bryant has published his first pub of photographs, some images printed on page s unfolding to five fee in length. >> it all kind of gelled into this one weird sort of project. >> reporter: another project that's since come to life is stephanie dudaro's. we met her last year, taking a detour from a stressful, unfulfilling career, to walk the califor
