star garvin thomas has tonight's "bay area proud". >> reporter: rain. even just a little of it. what john and terri gormley wouldn't have given for a little rain on that day in september, the day they stood in this very spot on lake countis cobb mountain convinced the valley fire was in the process of consuming their home not more than a mile away. >> oh, gosh, just overwhelming emotion. just holding each other and sobbing and just thinking, we lost it all. it's all gone. >> reporter: this, however, is the story of how the gormleys and 28 of their neighbors didn't lose their homes. >> and it started right on the other side of that hill a little way. >> reporter: it begins really just say couple of hours earlier when john, a current firefighter, and terry, a retired one, heard about a small fire burning near a friend's ranch and headed over to help. >> he said, oh, i'm glad you guys are here. do what you can to save my house. there's a grass right here. >> reporter: the grass rig, a pickup truck with a water tank and pump would prove critical to the gormleys, just not yet. what t

garvin thomas, nbc bay area news. >> well, let's talk to meteorologist kari hall.e have some blue sky behind you. >> yeah, it's a beautiful day. don't get too used to this, we've had it all week long. you know the weather is going to change before the weekend. as we take a live look now from mt. hamilton, we see those clear skies today. once again we'll have some clouds moving in and the rain won't be far behind. it's now 55 degrees in san francisco, 57 in the peninsula. as we drop in on the east bay, we do have a couple of spots that have made it up to 60 like newark, dublin is 57 and brentwood at 55. we're at 53 degrees now in the north bay, so as we go through the rest of the afternoon, a lot of sunshine in the south bay. a few more clouds moving in tonight, but our high temperatures reaching into the mid-60s and then for tonight mostly clear skies and lows dropping back into the 50s. now, we're up to almost 70 degrees tomorrow, so we'll have one more warm day, but i think there will be a few more clouds in the mix. and then on friday, that's when the rain comes

garvin thomas, nbc bay area news. >> there's a sentence we wouldn't have said a few years ago. >> noding. good for houdini. hope he finds a nice home and gets walked on a regular basis. good day for walking the dog today, kari. >> yes, it is. now that we're taking a break from the rain we had for the first two days of the week. and ocean beach a nice place to go take a nice long walk, but the waves have been really high. so you don't want to get too close to the water. waves up to about 10 to 15 feet and this as the next storm system approaches. so things staying choppy. we've seen a couple showers moving far to the north of us, but the bay area's been dry. and that will be the trend as we go into the day, also for most of the day tomorrow before that rain starts to reach in. look at all the mie kr climates now. it's 49 degrees in the north bay. it's 54 degrees in the peninsula, but let's drop in on the east bay where now it is 60 degrees in newark. in dublin it's 53 degrees. brentwood now at 54 degrees. feeling a little bit better, but we're not done there. we're going to see those

garvin thomas, nbc bay area news. >>> we continue to watch the weather both here and on the east coast. plane has slid off the runway. it looks like it's just rough all over. >> yeah, that's a pretty potent storm system. and it was the same one that was here on tuesday. it has tracked well off to the east. and now we have another one in its place. it's bringing some light rain as we take a live look now at oakland. and getting ready for a game tonight. now, ocean beach one of the spots we've been watching because of the high waves. and those swells up to about 12 to 16 feet as this storm system continues to get closer. we have been able to track a little bit of some lightning across parts of the central valley. but we can see that the storm system that center of low pressure that is swirling well to the west of us and tracking northeast still pretty far away. so we'll have several more hours of this rain moving through. but in the bay area much of the rain has been fairly low in the atmosphere. that's kind of what happens when we have these low level systems that move in. it's hard to

garvin and malcolm x. guess who else got in the way and annoyed and challenged the status quo? people like george washington, benjamin franklin, john adams, thomas jefferson who looked at unjust status quo and decided they would form a revolution to change and make the country that we now have. you know, before we get too upset with these young people, we need to understand that the tradition that they come from. our job is to apply the pressure that needs to be applied in a political way, a moral way and a social way. we have to make the nation ask itself, some hard questions and say some difficult truths. we kind of putting aside. and not focusing on and not addressing issues that come before us. i gave a speech in february 2009, people gave me a lot of grief about this nation not looking at racial issues. being afraid to confront racial issue. i thought it was right then. i'm more convinced now that what i said then was truth. unless we're willing to confront these issues and come up with solutions to them, we never really going to make progress. we'll feel comfortable. people in the 1950's, long before the 1950's, that was a time when racial
