"today in the bay's" garvin thomas has this morning's bay area proud. >> reporter: in 2003 jan's son came home with a letter saying the school district was closing her son's school. one of california's few remaining one or two room schoolhouses. she couldn't bear the thought of children not benefiting from the history. thanks to her, they're not. a building never gets to be historic unless it first survived being simply old. that rarely happens without someone who loves it. who knows if morgan hill's school would have survived the transition were it not for jan stran and the people she inspired to follow her. the school, an original one-room schoolhouse was already old by the time jan entered the first grade there. >> here i am in 1958. >> reporter: still, it was another 50 years before her first grader came home with a note from the district. machado was closing. jan tried her best to get them to change their mind. >> i lived in berkeley for a while. i was never -- i came back to sleepy morgan hill and balm a rouser. >> reporter: the district didn't budge. that wasn't going to stop

nbc bay area's garvin thomas is here. >> tom kowalski lost the fingers on his left hand years ago in an industrial accident. he said honestly that wasn't too much of a burden to overcome. losing his eyesight years later was. he only overcame it with the help of others, both human and animal and now wants to help them in return. >> good boy. >> reporter: in a world where people talk all the time about counting steps, tomko wall ski still speaks in miles. tom and his dog dynamo have been up and down the iron horse trail section in san ramon so many times, it's an open question as to who is leading whom these days. >> good boy. >> reporter: no question, tom says, though, where he'd be without his companion. tom, you should know, has always been the active type, running and golf, but tom was even an expert barefoot water skier. in 2007, almost overnight, a medical condition took much of his eyesight and almost all of his hope. >> it was a really struggle initially, i had given my wife a date i was going to commit suicid suicide about two months after this happened. >> reporter: with the
