garvin thomas is there along sky line boulevard. rvin. >> reporter: when hundreds of homes are evacuated of course they set up shelters for the evacuees to go to. and dozens of them took advantage of the multiple shelters set up last night here for the bear fire. when the sun came up if you told me they couldn't just stay there. they haduj to get a better perspective and they knew where to do it.w5r all day long you could find a handful of folks gathered at this spot on sky line boulevard, where the trees opened up and offered a clear view of the fire a mile and a half away. it wouldn't be right to call them spectators though. these are participants in the bear fire, between them and it are their homes. >> i live on that first ridge there which is oak ridge road. >> betsy got a call around midnight letting her know her house was no longer a safe place to be. >> the sheriffs department, mandatory immediate evacuation. like okay. we're out of here. >> reporter: like theim% others here betsy says her spirits rise with each plane and he

we began with garvin thomas. >> reporter: we were behind the winery early this morning and when we were there earlier this morning, the fire was just coming over that ridge, the hillside behind the castle, all day it has slowly been making its way down that hillside. the good news is it has given the firefighters plenty of time to take a defensive position behind the castle building, to dig breaks and position equipment. they'll have a good chance at saving the building, of course, provided the wind doesn't do what it did last night. the glow in the sky early this morning in santa rosa was not the sun coming up. it was fire coming over the hill. there was a sudden shift in the weather overnight and locals who said they were beginning to think they might be in the clear were once again staring at fire in their back yards and being told to leave. >> there's police car making all kinds of noise waking up the neighborhood to evacuate. >> i was like oh [ bleep ] we have to go. >> a little bit oh boy. i figured things were going to be safe here the way the winds were going and the fact that m

and north of highway 12 and we have our reporter now on scene, our first live look at the area, garvin thomasthere in santa rosa for us and garvin, what are you seeing? >> reporter: well, kira and marcus, you were talking about that new evacuation zone. we are right in the middle of that. we are at oakmont drive and highway 12. and i'm going to show you why this is a mandatory evacuation right now. as we've been here the past 15 minutes, you see that smoke and those flames on that hillside, it's been creeping ever closer. this is, as you're looking off to the east, this is kind of in the area of hood mountain regional park. if you understand that area. and with the wind shift and the increase in wind overnight, obvious the nuns fire, started moving over the ridge and down the hill. you can see the sky just filled with this smoke and the orange glow as the sun came up this morning. it really defined -- you could see a plume of smoke coming up where it had not been yesterday. and this is a lot of activity overnight. just give you a look around. you can see all the equipment. now, obviously, wit

i'm garvin thomas with a special post college edition of bay city area news. we begin on the berkeley campus where the students have taken to hiking in groups after a woman was attacked. police say that yesterday, a student was jogging on the upper fire trail just off campus when a man tackled and sexually assaulted her. she was able to get away. the bay area's sergio quintana is live on the berkeley campus and this is rattling nerves with so many students out for the home football game. >> a lot of the students that we talked to out there on the trail said they decided to travel in groups, and as you mentioned, the police say that attacker tackled that student as she was running on that trail last night. >> reporter: students and reside residentses of the neighborhood say that the upper fire trail above the uc-berkeley campus is a beautiful place for a hike or run, but an alert issued by the uc police department reveals that the student was attacked here yesterday. she was running on the trail when the man jumped at her and pulled her to the ground. the alert

during our 5:00 and 6:00 newscast our garvin thomas showed you live pictures of that firefight. flames surrounding that popular winery. and it remains under threat tonight. >>> berkeley firefighters releasing incredible new video tonight of what they saw the very first night of the north bay fires. members of berkeley engine 6 say they thought they were responding to a grass fire near santa rosa. when they got closer, though, they were surprised to see the glow of flames within city limits. just the beginning of the shock and disbelief. the kmart which they were supposed to use as a staging ground was burning. they ended up near a gas station. it was on fire too. you can hear firefighters in the background wondering why structures were being allowed to burn out of control. well, now it's very understandable. there was nothing anyone could do to stop those flames. too much too fast. the video was shot early monday morning. >>> as we mentioned, that red flag warning still in effect. taking a live look outside san francisco right now. >> and air quality for the greater bay area did
