here is garvin thomas. >> reporter: the winter olympics are less than two months away in south korea. a place and a date much closer that the figure skating world is focused on. that includes a talented trio from the bay area, hoping to be added to the list of bay area champions. it is a wednesday afternoon in early november and karen chan skates alone at san joses s.a.p. center. no coaches. no choreographers, no trainer. not even a single spectator taking up one of the 17,000 seats. she has only herself and her music to push her through this practice. well, that and the knowledge of what will happen in this very building the first week of january. >> when i took to the ice today, it was kind of had like, i was feeling nervous, but excited at the same time. it hit me like, in a few months, i will feel all this energy and this rush of excitement and nervous energy. >> reporter: san jose is home to the 2018 united states figure skating championship. the competition that will go a long way to deciding who represents the u.s. at the winter games in pyeongchang. a competition this native w
