all new this morning and already historic figure skater is making headlines again. >> garvin thomas therefor the emotional moment in south korea. he joins us live to tell us more about it. hi, garvin. >> reporter: hey, laura. just a few hours ago we headed over to a press conference to talk with bay area native and team u.s.a. figure skater vincent zhou. also there has his teammate, newly minted bronze medalist openly gay figure skater adam rippon. when the subject turned to his controversy with the vice president, mike pence, things got a little emotional. now, in an interview last month the openly gay rippon had harsh words for the vice president when it came to lgbtq issues. the vp responded that rippon was misinformed about his position and it went back and forth. as the games began rippon said he didn't want to talk about it anymore because he didn't want it to be a distraction. when asked today he did say something positive has come out of all of this. >> i've gotten so many messages and it's -- i could even get emotional thinking about it, but like i've gotten so many messages from

i'm garvin thomas. janelle: and i'm janelle wang. we're at squaw valley in lake tahoe, home to california's only winter games back in 1960. and check this out, we're on the funitel. the skiers get quite the views when they take this ride up the mountain. it's a slow trip up, which must feel like an eternity for a bobsledder. teams of two or four people are timed racing down a narrow, twisting ice track in sleds at speeds topping nearly 100 miles an hour. team usa trains at lake placid, new york. monterey's nick cunningham is one of those athletes. garvin: it may be a surprising sport for a guy who grew up surfing the california coast, but one day his parent suggested bobsledding. janelle: in addition to being an olympic athlete, nick cunningham is also a sergeant in the army national guard, both roles he takes to heart. what you're about to see is what an olympic bobsledder sees. in this case, nick cunningham's point of view as he pilots a sled skidding along a sheet of ice at close to 100 miles per hour, which might make what you're

garvin thomas spoke with those athletes and their families within the past couple hours. >> garvin is live with what they're all saying. >> reporter: good morning. one of the fun parts of the olympic games is there are just so many different events, so many venues. they couldn't possibly hold them all at the same time so they take place all times of the day or night and biathlon and bobsled are two of the ones that are regularly held at night. just finishing a few moments ago was the biathlon mixed relay. two american men and two american women against the best 20 countries in the world. skiing and shooting the second leg for the u.s. palo alto native and gun high school graduate joanne reid. it has been a roller coaster for reid, doing poorly in her first event, great in the second, then a rough go in the relay putting her team in a deficit they couldn't overcome. >> i'd like to think i went out there and gave it my best shot. that's what matters in the end. two years from now nobody is going to remember who shot what. oh, yeah, were you there in korea? oh, yeah, i was and it was awe

"today in the bay's" garvin thomas joins us live. a bay area athlete competed. >> reporter: that's right. not only did she compete but she did very well. the goal of every athlete is to win a medal, of course, but not winning a medal doesn't necessarily count as a loss. that was the case for two local athletes who competed here and held their own in pyeongchang. bryce bennett skied the men's downhill race, finished in 16th place which the downhill is an event where experience counts for a lot so for a 25-year-old in his first olympic games this is a good result. bryce told me right after the run that standing in the starting gate for the olympic downhill after years of hard work felt pretty darned great and he believes this experience was one he needed in order to do even better in the future. >> what i took away from this experience you have to have all your ducks in a row and have everything in your career lined up and in place so when this day comes and when it does come you can execute. >> reporter: execute is just what palo alto

it's been a beautiful from i in pyeongchang, our garvin thomas tweeting out this photo. ry at olympic park. that's surprising because it's been pretty cold there. garvin joins us again now this morning. >> it seems like you've been having a blast in south korea. >> reporter: we certainly have. it's been one fun thing after another, one event after another and the weather today was spectacular, about 42 degrees, sunshine. now, the olympic park where we are now it's empty now, but it was packed earlier today. people have been waiting for the good weather to come out. we have video we shot overnight to show you because the crowds stayed there well into the night. of course, there is a down side to some of that, you have a lot of lines for a lot of the attractions within the park, but one attraction that always seems to have a line is one of the simplest ones, there is a lot of technology here, but they have a bobsled set up by the omega timekeeping people that you can sit in and take a picture in, but why would anyone want to do something as silly as that, sit in a bobsled a

"today in the bay's" garvin thomas is already in south korea. >> he joins us now live. garvin, i was nervous for you. i understand you just got back from the dmz that separates the two countries. how did it feel to be in one of the most volatile places in the world? >> reporter: well, laura and marcus, when people often describe a place as one of a kind often they are exaggerating, but when you get to the dmz that's not an exaggeration, this is like no other place in the world. we arrived in the country on saturday, have spent a few days getting to know the lay of the land an here at the olympic plaza, for example, learning where all the venues are, the one with the colorful lights that's where the short track speed skating and figure skating will be. yesterday we were in a very different place. nbc organized a tour for reporters and photographers to go to the dmz, that's the two and a half mile wide stretch of land that separates north and south korea, the most militarized border in all the world. there is only one place in all of that where the fence opens up and that'

we also like to highlight some of the fans. >> "today in the bay's" garvin thomas found a man who hasng the games with a special friend. tell us more about it, garvin. >> reporter: laura and marcus, when i got here to the olympics i knew i would meet athletes and athletes' families and people who come from around the world to watch the sport, even pin trader. dave is an american who lives in australia and he brings a friend with him to the olympics, if you recognize it, yes, that is david hass hassle who have. . he is had a fan of hasslehof and he travels the world, he goss to the olympics. this is his sixth olympic games bringing the figure with him. he loves to take pictures with it. i wish i could tell you a good reason why he does this. he says it's fun, a great way to meet people, but some people just -- there's no figuring. >> unique. >> is he married? >> reporter: yeah. you know, marcus, that was one question i didn't get answered from him. but i have a guess. >> i have one as well. he said he's looking to meet some people so maybe he will meet a lucky someone. >> he deserves t

our garvin thomas is still in south korea.or us this morning. >> reporter: well, marcus, we were at a press conference with the halfpipe free skiers for team "usa today" and the subject of valentine's day came up. now, that includes tahoe heaters and skiers david wise and maddie bowman and they were asked what their plans were for valentine's day. >> i will answer the valentines question first because i actually do have some plans for tonight. my wife and i went through a two-year project creating a vow renewal video, we've been married for seven years now and kind of coming up on our fifth anniversary so we started shooting this video. i'm relaunching that, that's kind of my -- i mean, we're obviously not together because she is not here yet but we're relaunching that video and there is some writing to go with it so you guys can stay tuned for that coming out. >> valentine's day on the girls side, i think we will finish watching "the bachelor". >> winter times. >> the bachelor winter games start tomorrow. that's on our to-do

garvin thomas has been working while we were all sleeping. one athlete that we have been watching took part in for qualifying heats overnight. >> really a disappointing few hours for nick cunningham. >> reporter: that's right, marcus and laura. i just spoke with him within the past hour when he walked off the track after his third run, he looked at me, laughed and said he was hoping he wouldn't see me until after the fourth run tonight but his times weren't good enough, he didn't qualify for that last run. now, nick cunningham and his brake hand had a keen sabor dug themselves such a dig time hole that not even their fastest run in the third run could help them out. i asked nick what it was like going to bed after those first two runs knowing he had no chance but still had to wake up the next day and still compete. >> when you have a bad race you have to forget about it and nobody taught me that more than steve holcomb. i tried to take a page out of his book and let it go. z it's a new day, i can't change anything so to go into today i had to

"today in the bay's" garvin thomas live in pyeongchang. there were unexpected results as well for team u.s.a. >> reporter: well, yeah, laura and unexpected not in a good way. fourth place in the olympics is an amazing accomplishment, the problem is when you're mikaela shiffrin the best female skier on the planet not landing on the podium that's a bit of a shocker and she landed in fourth in her best event the slalom. figure skating, they say you can't win a medal in the short program but you can lose one and that looks like what nathan chen might have done, stumbling through his program and falling all the way to 17th place going into the free skate. who is still standing? well, adan rippon is, very proudly, as a matter of fact. rippon who skated well in the team event helping the u.s. win a bronze skated with his trademark showmanship and wowed the crowd in pyeongchang finishing a respectable seventh place going into tomorrow's free skate. his mom telling us no matter what happens he is already a winner. >> i don't think he would trade in

bring in nbc bay area's garvin thomas from the olympics. >> you're right, all about figure skating here at olympics today. can be a very technical sport. sometimes difficult to understand or anticipate how the judges see it. but tonight's performances, even the most casual fans could understand, russian skaters in class by themselves. top of the class is 15-year-old, alina zagitova skated beautifully. technically flawless. second youngest figure skater ever to win a gold medal and first olympic athlete from russia to win gold at these games. finished ahead of her teammate yevgenia medvedeva, also nearly perfect performance. going into tonight, two-time champion had to be considered favorite but she must settle for silver. no medals for americans in this event, including fremont's karen chen. 18-year-old stumbled more than once in free skate and fell from short program place to land in 11th position. after her skate karen told me she felt she let herself and family down, didn't show the world what she was capable of. but stepping off the ice, no doubt what was next. >> what i really did

garvin thomas joins us live in south korea. >> garvin, you talked to karen chen overnight. first, though, a different group of american athletes made history less than three hours ago. >> reporter: that's right. marcus, you know, there has been a lot of talk at these games about the lack of medals that team u.s.a. has been winning. well, we just pulled a gold out overnight from the most unexpected of places. how unexpected? well, the united states had never won a gold medal in the sport of cross-country. well, that is until now. the women's team sprint competition came down to the wire. will m a photo finish with the u.s. team of jesse diggins and keeken randall pulling it off. a medal might be out of reach for karen chen after the short program in the women's figure skating. the 18-year-old is in tenth place. all three americans stumbled during their program, chen having trouble with her opening combination, one she said she nailed every single day of practice this week. >> to not be able to do that there and open my program with that, i was definitely a little disappointe
