. >> garvin thomas has the story that will make the bay area proud. >> reporter: miriam yard was in andf foster care growing up. her mom passed away when she was 5 and her dad the first year in clem. learning that her kidneys were failing might want to make her give up. turns out to be just the opposite. for someone who grew up in foster care with precious few good family role models, this woman sure figured out how to be a great one. >> you learn along the way, you know, you learn what you want to have. >> just witness what she does three times a week for her friend miriam yard. driving her to her dialysis treatments. keeping her company during the four-hour process. she needs the support. she doesn't have many in her life. >> miriam, you see, is also a child of the foster care system. their chosen family is what these two call each other. being there in good times and bad, and for mirrium things are pretty rocky right now. >> you know, i do have some rough days and for the main part, most part, i'm very positive will my condition. >> miriam's condition is both her kidneys have failed.
