gary, welcome to the show. what a fascinating book. i want to start with the why. write this book? it's certainly relevant if you look at the news tonight. i know you didn't include former president trump the president. but let's talk about the why you wrote this book. why? >> thank you for having me, laura. well, since i was a little kid, i have wibeen fascinated with t presidency. i worked in the clinton administration. i came to witness some really remarkable close friendship between leaders and their best friends. and i saw how this friend could speak more bluntly, act more naturally than any staffer or aid could and even in some cases how the meaningful impact on pretty consequential decisions. to my surprise, there's been little written about this dyn dynamic. there has been books about first wives, first pets, first butlers, but nothing about first friends, so i decided to write the book. >> the confidant status, the idea that rapport is being build could shape our whole nation. i want to talk about this unique relationship between presidentd. i wonder how y
