i can show you gary hart and ronald reagan, john anderson competitive with reagan. are -- they form a hypnotic effect on people. i'd like to point out to you there's not any front runner in the modern air rarks since the primaries began who has not at one point or another had to take a punch. there's no question hillary has taken several. there's to question that bernie sanders is talking to a progressive wing of the party. maybe there will be a socialist wing of the democratic party out of this. maybe something that europeans would recognize as a left wing, other than what we with would pass for that which has mostly been identify politics. that might be healthy but i don't think you can say anything about where the democratic party race is going based on what is happening this early. one more thing, the idea there are democratic power brokers planning a plan b is the funniest thing we have heard tonight. they have mentioned everybody except mike dukakis. there are no power brokers. doesn't happen anymore. no smoke-filled rooms because you can't smoke anymore. the

walter mondale wins iowa, gary hart wins new hampshire. now we have our race.n 2000, al gore beats bill bradley in those first two states. that ends the race on the spot. it's never happened that the insurgent wins both of those. i'm torn looking at this between two possible scenarios here. one is a world in which bernie sanders actually pulls that off. right now you look at it and say it's plausible he could pull that off. is that a world where there's such panic and such chaos that things crumble for hillary clinton down the line. the flip side is when you look down the line, the states that hillary clinton's campaign is pointing to right now, the southern states, the super tuesday states, the sec pree mare states, these are states where the establishment candidate has done very well. black voters loom so large in the south. that's her firewall. so those two things are in conflict with each other. >> in terms of the candidates -- those two candidates facing off against each other, how much do they need to trim their sales or think about their strategy in ligh

just like gary hart. that had summer surges, maybe eastern stargtled the front-runner, in the end couldn't put together a broad enough coalition to bring down the candidate. >> how worried are the clinton people right now? by no means in panic mode but certainly worried? >> they are worried, wolf. i think if you get farther -- i think -- this is labor day. right? they think of this as a very key moment where people, voters, caucusgoers, start to pay more attention to what's going on to the different candidates, to the different policies. and they think during this period where we are expecting to see hillary clinton do some more interview, and try to combat some of this e-mail controversy, that she's going to be ale to talk more to voters, and voters, because they are going to pay more attention to the policies, they think that ultimately they are where more voters and more caucus-goers are. now, keeping in mind as we get next month mid-october, into the first debate, democratic debate, which is cnn, of c
