here to talk about that and the future of the airline industry is gary kelly.e has spent 28 years with the airline and he celebrates his 10th anniversary as the ceo. he joins us from dallas. good to see you go en. it's a pleasure to reconnect with you. >> great to be with you, ali. >> congratulations on your 10 years as ceo. you've weathered in really, no pun intended but turbulent times for a the airline industry. we've seen consolidations and where are we now compared to 10 years ago and 30 years ago when you started. >> things are a lot of different. first of all, it's been a real honor for me to serve, and the fact that we've avoided the pitfalls that happened to the rest--especially the legacy carriers, is a source pride within southwest airlines. the industry is vastly different ten years later, and southeast airlines is different, too. we're on the cusp of tremendous opportunities here in 2014. all the hard work over the last ten years is really paying off. >> i find the airline industry fascinating. in addition to your business i business plan in runnin

why don't we go to gary kelly, chairman and ceo of southwest. for coming on "squawk on the street." >> our pleasure. >> >> okay. let's get right to it. there's been multiple years where you were the only company that's made multiple money. has this industry become a secular grower and we're not going to go back to the feast and famine days? >> jim, that would be terrific. southwest has been profitable for 41 consecutive years and we're well on our way here to 42. but the legacy airlines, every single one has been gone or gone through bankruptcy. they have produced solid profits and are beginning to return value to shareholders finally. i think that's all a good sign. what is good for the industry is going to be good for southwest airlines. >> there are not a lot of startups. there are four new startups. boeing stock is down today because people are saying no, don't worry. plane inventory is building. is there a new challenger coming in or is it going to stay the way that we see it as the big five? >> you know, jim, i've been in business almost 30

but gary kelly believes there's room for growth there.so says with the fleet expanding to more long haul 737s, that can go greater distances, this is a prime opportunity for southwest to look for growth beyond the lower 48 u.s. states. >> we've committed to build a five gate international terminal in fort lauderdale. we'll look across the united states and look at our positions of strength, whether it's denver, whether it's chicago, where we're flying international from orange county. and we'll be able to do things that nobody else can. and we think we have a wonderful opportunity for international growth. >> shares of southwest airlines over the last year, they have more than doubled. they certainly have performed well along with the rest of the airline stocks over the last year. guys, this expansion is not just about these quick hops down to certain destinations of the caribbean. eventually, look for southwest to fly into the northern part of south america. that's probably the farthest they'll go. but this is the beginning of southwest
