and that's what we kind of saw in the those comments from senator gary peters who basically said, you needs to come out and have a clear break with joe biden on this issue. that's a very dangerous thing to say. it's a break with the entire history of american foreign policy as it relates to israel, and i think if she actually does something like that, it would be a historic event for the democratic party many a very bad way for the country. stuart: it would further guide the party and the country. >> yes. stuart: what would jewish voters do after something like that? >> i think they would react and say this is unacceptable. i mean, this is a break with america's greatest ally in the middle east. and hen the other thing that really stuck out to me i have to say, stuart, is there is a abiding hatred there that is very open and really, i think, despicable. there was a group of counter-protesters in that i followed as they walked through the crowd yesterday of people who were waving israel flags and american flags, a very small group. they had posters of dietrich bonhoeffer that they were

chief among them knowing this, gary peters, who is in this.t montana and ohio, what do you think. >> montana and ohio will probably decide who controls the senate. we know that donald trump is doing much better in those places. it is an uphill battle for democrats to hold on to them. i think the issues are similar we've seen everywhere. economic issues and immigration. immigration powerful, certainly in the midwest. the stakes are incredibly high. i don't think people appreciate it. you have to go back to george h.w. bush to be the last president who didn't come in with the house and senate in control when they come in. if kamala harris does win and democrats lose the montana senate race, she may not actually be able to move a legislative agenda. you think back to trump and bush with their tax cuts. obamacare. biden with the inflation reduction act. all these things they were able to do, legislative achievements that they are going to be known for forever because their party controlled congress. you assume a president come in and can do things

we spoke with gary peters on this program last night.chairs the senate campaign arm and he says he thinks democrats, even with this tough senate map can't get to 51 democrats in this next election. are you that optimistic? sen. durbin: gary is our quarterback, retaining a democratic majority in the senate so i stand by his analysis. he's got much better information than i have. the spirit of this chicago convention i think is going to help a lot of challengers as well as incumbents running for reelection. amna: what do you expect to hear from barack obama tonight? you were instrumental inis decision to run into thousand eight and he probably could not have done it without you. sen. durbin: good to have him back home again. he and i speak from time to time he had his take on some of these issues is unique. the two of them will be a fascinating evening. geoff: great to see you. thank you so much for your time. amna: among the crucial battleground states this election is michigan. part of the democrats so-called blue wall. the stakes are ev

you talk to someone like gary peters, the head of the campaign arm of senate democrats, he kind of says the same thing, but they are looking at adding these seats. but then when you try to get specifics from them, they're not always very specific about the addition. i think what's more likely is that the key -- you could possibly end up with a 50/50 senate again, and, you know, depending on who the vice president is, they may serve as exactly what vice president harris did for a while, as that tie breaking vote. >> if a majority of the democrats win, a minority. if the republicans win. is there a single issue they believe might drive more voters to the poll or is it a different issue for each state? >> they think it's a different issue for each state. however, reproduction access, abortion, as we have seen, in basically every election since dobbs came down was overturned, that is the thing that is motivating a lot of people, right? you look at sherrod brown in ohio. you look at jackie rosen. you look at even jon tester. for jon tester, he's not going to talk about reproductive access as

senator gary peters from michigan, thank you very much for joining us. sen. peters: thank you.ff: jonathan, based on your conversations among senate democrats, how are they feeling about their chances in keeping the chamber? jonathan: in keeping the senate, i have not had deep conversations with folks about their thoughts about the senate. but i do think democrats overall in the house and the senate and those looking at the white house are really confident about taking a majority in the house. i think they are more confident than they were a month ago that the chances are better than 50-50 that they can win the white house, especially given the way things are. with the senate, people sort of hesitate. it is sort of like, maybe we can hold onto the majority. which is why i thought senator peters, when he said oh, we will keep 50, i was not surprised by that. what i was surprised is democrats are always hopeful about texas and florida, but they never talk about it, really. because it is always like, eh, good try. the fact the head of the democratic senatorial campaign committee s

senate democrats, majority leader chuck schumer, and the head of the senate democratic campaign arm gary peters, to talk about what harris means for their most difficult races. what is kamala harris do for red states like ohio and montana? >> look, the bottom line is we'll have a great democratic program. she knows what average people think about. look at the brilliance of putting forward this $25,000 a break for first-time homebuyers? 25 to 40 year-old's who are doing pretty well. but one of their biggest problems is they still rent and while they can afford the monthly mortgage payment, they can't afford the down-payment. this is mana from heaven, sherrod brown will campaign on that. jon tester that shows even endorsed her yet he doesn't he's going to talk about issues that they both care about. >> you don't think it's you don't think it's i think it's a mistake that he hasn't endorsed her. i leave it to jon tester. >> he's going to win. he knows montana better than anybody else. >> jon tester has not endorsed kamala harris. is that a mistake? >> he knows how to run his race, he knows what's

but i talked to the top democratic campaign chief earlier today, gary peters, about the impact that this new ballot initiative in montana to protect abortion access, how that could impact there chances to keep the majority. he believes, in fact, that it could help and i'm think to save tesla's job do you think that will save the majority that ballot referendum on abortion? it's certainly very powerful to turn people out and it's going to be a big reason why people are voting and why they're going to vote but for jon tester and other candidates, you mentioned florida. >> it's going to turn out folks in florida, i think that puts in play for us as well and that's a big reach that for democrats to try to start a kid, pick up a seat in florida that already seems very difficult given the makeup of the stade, rick scott, the incumbent republican senator as a ton of money but just shows you the democratic thinking that bout initiatives regarding abortion could put florida in play, potentially nevada and arizona, two others swing states both in the presidential and as well in the senate. >> they

impeachment a, as gary said, it was, it hadn't been used and it was used in effective over 100 years ago. it was considered a very extreme measure. and before the october 20th of that year. peter rodino, who had been by then, mr. chairman and myself and others, we never talked about it. it was not part of a conversation. you watch the you watch the events. not good, but impeachment was not private or public. a conversation that took on the house, the night that saturday night that took that monday. it was topic number one. and i can remember, i was in new york at the time, came back and the chairman was was in new jersey. he was congressman from newark, came back. i can remember sitting in the office and i don't know i can't remember 50 years ago was there he said, but he said i think this is going to become an issue. now it's interesting. he was not a fan of this. he thought again of liberal democrat party line liberal. he was not an activist. and i always distinguish that between being liberal or conservative and are you an activist and he was not. he was a very party line. been in the senate for the house for many years. people in the house knew him. no one outside the hous
