back with me gary kaltbaum and gary smith. gary kaltbaum, a range of stocks, what stocks and what industries do you like in the markets? >> well, look, first off amazon, google, both of them big gaps to the upside on very big numbers. the market loss of the mega cap stocks, going to include apple which i've been bearish on for the last seven or eight months, it sounds like the money crowd is back in that one, too. that is the place to go. starbucks was one of the names, the reaction not that great, the numbers are good and kicked you know what with the mobile and other things they're selling in there, so i think that's still in good shape. you mentioned gopro, it's a great example of a company that has kind of sort of one thing, faddish, amazingly it's bad enough they lowered numbers in half, they're doing it during the holiday season and tells you everything you need to been that company right now. deirdre: great point. that holiday season all-important for retailers. some getting 60% of revenue from that one month alone. gary

gary smith. paul ryan is the guy. will he be able to bring republicans together.have talked about this splintering in the party. can he fix that? >> clearly the only person that had any chance at all of trying to do that. there are some people within the house gop that do not believe that he is very conservative. i think for a while, we will have a honeymoon. giving him two years. eighteen months of breathing room on budget and shutdown issues. he has an opportunity to build those coalitions. give them both that may have no chance of getting through the senate. i think that he has a chance. this group is so splintered. it will be hard for anybody. i wish him well. trish: what is your take on his ability to unify? >> you know, i am kind of curious why he even took the job. i think that it is a thankless job with almost no upside. you mentioned the honeymoon. at this point, probably until next monday. and then his honeymoon will be over. i think the republican party is now almost two different parties. you have the which party on the far right and you have the centr

gary b. smith, and max step ford is with me now. in your view, gary, economy headed for downturn or not? >> i think so, deirdre. i look, when you say downturn, every signal that i'm see something down. manufacturing is down. wages are flat to down. housing is still down from the peak of 2007. labor force participation is down. corporate profits are down. what is, i don't see the good news. if anyone argues, oh, my gosh we're about to have boom times, i just don't see the evidence. deirdre: as far as silver linings, i've heard some people refer to the fact that corporate america has more cash than ever on the balance sheet. i'm thinking of apple at close to $180 billion. and the fact that wage inflation is only now just starting to go higher, meaning that companies have been able to become more profitable. what is your take? >> i look at, there is a lot of predictions flying around and what's interesting even if economists could predict recessions accurately, i don't think they can, it actually doesn't matter for investors. the market
