sandy hook elementary is open once again. >> and gary tuchman joins me live now from newtown, connecticutso, gary, how did the day go? what was the atmosphere like for everybody at the school? >> reporter: well, it certainly was an unusual day, ashleigh. it was very emotional. the children walked in and hugged their friends. it was wonderful for the pants to see their children see their friends. there was increased security and we did a story a few weeks ago about the comfort dogs, the golden retrievers brought here by lutheran charities that children can pet to make them feel more comfortable and the comfort dogs were in the school, too. all in all, it was something that had to be done and it was certainly very emotional. one thing i want to add, tomorrow here in newtown, former congresswoman gabby giffords will talk to the families of the victims and talk about inspiration. >> it's very nice to hear that. gary, please pass on our thoughts and wishes to the people of newtown. gary tuchman live for us in newtown tonight. >>> coming up, an adoption battle that centers on a little girl name

our gary tuchman joins me now from connecticut. so gary, how are things going in the preparations for tomorrow? >> reporter: well, ashleigh, today the children, the teachers, the administrators who survived the massacre had an orientation at the new school, and tomorrow they will be going to the new school. and it's very interesting. it's a middle school that is called the chalk hill middle school but it was mothballed a couple years ago, so it's been empty. sought sign that says chalk hill on the bottom left-hand corner of the sign right now there's a sign that says sandy hook elementary. this school has been changed and retrofitted for the new students. the bathrooms have been made smaller. the desks from the old school have been brought to the new school. the same teachers will be there. so the idea is for the children to be as comfortable as possible. but it will be a very emotional day. you know, dawn hochsprung, she was the principal of the school who was killed, beloved by everybody. and just a short time ago i talked with he

gary tuchman is there talking to people or at least trying to talk to them. he joins us now. gary? >> reporter: sanjay, this is not only a story of an alleged sadistic rape but its nexus with social media and high school football. and that's because steubenville, ohio, is a high school football hotbed, and the two young men arrested for allegedly raping this girl were high school football stars. this city, the big reds, stbenville high school big red football team is a big deal here. they won three state championships, two undefeated seasons recently, and their coach is absolutely a legend here. the coach's name is reno sacoch, he's such a legend that the 10,000-seat stadium which is a huge size for a high school stadium, is called epireno stadium. we wanted to talk to the coach because the two young men arrested for the alleged rape were suspended after they were arrested, but at least two other football players were in the room when the young girl were allegedly raped, and they were not suspended. they played football for at least eight weeks. we wanted to find out from the coach
