gary tuckman, our cnn correspondent. now let's go to texas.enior operations psychologist with the nasa behavioral health and performance group. he and dr. holland are a mass of the team of experts who went to chile to assess the miners. they join us from houston, texas. dr. holland, what has nasa been providing for this situation? >> basically, larry, when we went down there from a psychological point of view, we first of all wanted to focus on the adjustment of the attitudes from short-term expectations of coming up out of the mine to a more longer term view of adjusting to the confinement and the families adjusting to the long-term separation as well. we also wanted them to understand about the rhythms and importance of regularity to their daily life and schedule. we understand what the reunion may be like when they come home. i think the authorities have done an excellent job, including the psychological job there for preparing the individual miners and their families. >> larry: will these men face anything similar to what an astronaut face

joining us live is gary tuckman. this has come to a sudden standstill.aying all inin attention to one of the wheels what is going on? do you know? >> reporter: pit stop is a good analogy. i will call it a tune-up. after 68 days, they want to make sure that this fenix capsule is in good shape. so far it has done the job. five miners have come up. there are still 28 left. the next person will be coming up, a 30-year-old man by the name of osman araya. he has four children and a wife who will be very eager to see him. that's where they get an extended chance to talk to their families. they are give an couple of hours to do that. they are mandated to take a helicopter ride to do that. what they are doing, they are turning off all the lights in the area. it is a safety measure for the pilots and they are flying the miners to a hospital about a half an hour away from here. sit mandated that they get treatment. very happy with how things are going. >> gary tuckman there at the mine. clearly we are having some audio issues there. we will attempt to correct those

let's bring in gary tuckman on this. he is watching all of this unfold from a very different vantage point. gary, what's going on where you are? >> reporter: well, colleen, it has been an amazing magical evening watching these miners come up from the surface. right behind us, we're about 600 meters from the site of where these rescues are taking place. we now have three down. 30 to go. at this rate it will take about 36 hours. so it will continue into thursday, maybe friday morning. the fact is the most significant fact. when that first miner came up, it proved this capsule could successfully carry a human being from below the ground. way below the ground. they've been there 68 days and successfully going up to his family. so while it was a great thrill for his family and his friends to have him back, it told the other relatives and friends that they would likely be carried successfully aboard the fenix. that's what's happening. what is interesting about the situation is we are the closest civilians from the site. it has
