gas infrastructure, will you have to pay for it? good afternoon. i'm claudine wong in for tori campbell. right now the public utilities commission is trying to decide if pg&e can raise its rates to pay for upgrades to its natural gas transmission system. a bay area lawmaker is calling on the p.u.c. to reject that proposal. we're live with details on what jerry hill and advocates had to say. >> reporter: after the san bruno pipeline disaster the california public utilities commission ordered all utilities in the state to make upgrades to their pipeline systems, presume plea to prevent a disaster like the one that happened in september 2010 from ever happening again. to pay for that long term maintenance work, pg&e says it needs to spend $2.2 billion. the money for those upgrades would be passed on to rate payers over the next 45 years. members of turn the utility reform network and assemblyman jerry hill say that's not fair. they held a press conference outside the cpuc calling on the agency to reject pg&e's $2.2 billion proposal. hill says pg&e's shareholders should pick up the tab for this maintenance work, not the rate payers.
