as far as gas explosions go this is as good as it gets. nobody hurt and no fire evening. here comes the smell of gas once again in the air but that might just be left over stuff but it is been chilling cold, i hate using cliches as you know, our viewers, but it is down to the bones. i have six layers on today and it is in the good to go out. two pair of gloves ape my fingers are frozen. hear you hear fire department's reverse alarm and that is a good sign f they are leaving that means danger for the most parties leaving the the area as well. so pgw hats off to you guys working in the middle of the night. they are used to working in the worst conditions in the middle of the night. hopefully they have got this problem fixed and these people's vac waited according to those two neighbors she said ten to 12 people and their poor little dog about ten years old took a break on the ice and they thought she was just scared but volunteers come out in the middle of the night to help fine pet and take care of pets when people get evacuated. they are out here as well. the great people

gas line demands immediate evacuation. nearby homes were evacuated and the explosion occurred hour and a half later. last year work crews struck a gas line but residents were not evacuate evacuated. when the explosion happened an hour later 62-year-old was a captive victim. quick evacuations will consistently save lives. >> get out of there. it's as risky as you could have a situation in your neighborhood. we found it had one serious incident. excavation damage in 2008. the biggest area of concern may be philadelphia where pgw is replacing about 20 miles of its leakiest gas mains year. that process will take 88 years at that pace. pgw says responding to the odor of gas is one of its to priorities. it's on scene within an hour in 98% of those cases. live tonight in the digital operation center i'm george spencer, nbc 10 news. >>> a bus aid is suspected of stealing lunches and cash from preschoolers. police say bus video shows rosa rummaging through the kids backpacks backpacks. the children range in age 3 to 5 years old. authorities say she stole food and lunch money from nearly 30 of them. >>> tonigh

"eyewitness news" reporter jan carabao joins us what is happening, good morning jan? >> reporter: erika and ukee good morning. the gas crews have been working around the clock here trying to get that service restore to that area we are being kept far from the scene this morning. you can see oak avenue just down there with those police lights. the they are keeping us off of that street, right now as gas employees continue to work. i was just able to talk to a police office shore says yes there are crew is still down there and crews hope to have gas restored in this area over the next hour. now the mayor of stafford township tells us that the the explosion yesterday was caused by a a 34 year-old main gas line here

we have more information on an explosion that leveled a home. natural gas leaking from ungrande backed under and ignited. ted greenberg joins us live from stafford township. you have new video that shows the aftermath of this explosion? >> we do and it gives us new insight into what happened here after that blast caused so much destruction. destruction. >> this longer police dash cam video obtained by nbc 10 today captured the moments immediately after the house explosion. >> we got injuries. >> it includes audio and shows police officers running towards the scene on oak avenue in stafford township tuesday morning. soon after the blast you hear frantic efforts to help one from the victims. >> today investigators believe what they believed cautioned the house to blow up. gas leaking from a crack in a two-inch main made its way along the water line into the street and into the home's basement. >> as it built up you have utilities in the basement. your furnace hot water heater. one of those sparks set off the explosion. >> two gas company workers investigating

gas and precious heat to 300 houses. greg johnson who was at home at the time of the explosion, built a fire and pull out space heaters to keep his family warm. >> once the gas company was turning everything off i said this would be a long night. i loaded up. >> reporter: around 11:00 a.m. natural gas workers and first responders were on the scene after a report of the gas leak. they were evacuating homes when an officer's dash cam caught the explosion. >> he was returning to his car at about the time the explosion happened. instantly once the the explosion happened, he entered his car pushed the record button knowing that the recorder would capture 30 seconds prior. >> reporter: fifteen people were injured including fire fighters emt's and natural gas employees. two of those workers are still critical. the guest house belonged to a well known family the reynolds. >> they are heart broken over what has happened, after the gas company employees but quite frankly mrs. reynolds says the homes can be replaced. >> reporter: for i perkins lives a few doors down. blast shattered her basement windows and knocked their deer head

gas, there could be an ignition point. that's actually something that could lead to an explosion. 0 investigators, we started looking into gas safety. like today in new jersey people in philadelphia they smell gas on a street in a specific neighborhood. now, if you smell that rotten egg odor that familiar odor that is in that natural gas, not only should you call the gas company immediately, but leave the area. get away from that smell. >> mitch what about the age of the pipes across our area? >> i'm not going to surprise you here. they are old. literally thousands of miles of gas pipes in the area. the cast iron ones they tend to be the oldest, the most brittle, and the first pipes ulgs utilities want to replace the gas company that operates in stafford and other parts of new jersey. they operate 6700 miles of total gas lines. for reference, the city of philadelphia, they have about 6,000 miles. >> and it makes you wonder about the replacement schedule if there is indeed one that exists. >> there has to be. the regulators they insist upon it that you are actually updating your gas
