i'm gasia. this is bay area news at 7. police and occupy protesters are standing eye to eye at san francisco's justin herman plaza right now. the stand off comes in the wake of today's breakup of the occupy encampment there. that's your top story. patly lee is -- patty lee is live at the scene. >> reporter: the effort is under way right now. let me show you what's happening right here. san francisco police have surrounded some of these occupy protesters, but the occupy protesters are also now surrounding police officers. they are linking hands. now, inside these circles you can see occupy protesters sitting down. they have pitched a symbolic tent, a gesture. others are holding hands, in this circled perimeter. there are about 250 to 300 protesters here. and an estimated 100 officers. i've talked to some of these officers who say they have not been briefed yet on when or even if they'll be ordered to remove this group from this area. but it is not likely these protesters will be allowed to stay. just half an hour ago, city

i'm gasia, this is bay area news at 7. one person is hospitalized, another is on the loose after a mid afternoon shooting involving san francisco police officers. it all happened about 1:30 this afternoon in the midst of a traffic stop on bush and larkin streets. our chopper was over that scene shortly after the first reports came in. it's our top story at 7. janet is live in san francisco to bring us up to date on the search for a suspect. >> reporter: gasia, this all happened a half block up on bush street. police say the driver got out of his car, exchanged gun fire with officers, and ended up being shot right over here next to is that sedan. witnesses tell me that the suspect was a white male about 6 feet tall with a short buzzed haircut and he was covered in blood. neighbors say they heard the gun fire about 1:30 this afternoon along larkin street. >> shots shots, just something like that, four, five, six times. >> i heard the sounds and looked out the window, and you can kind of see all the -- all the gruesome stuff.
