>> reporter: gasia that is the hospital that has been fined with violation of protocall. one that led a staff member and a police officer to contract a serious disease. the oakland hospital settled to pay a fine of there 84,000 for not protecting workers -- $84,000 for not pro tebgting workers. >> they failed to do the basic, low-cost compliance of notification, evaluation and prompt treatment. >> sleeping issues. >> reporter: 49-year-old sam was working at summit in december 2009 when a seriously ill patient arrived. as a respiratory therapist he worked on the man exposing himself to meningitis. >> they put myself, my family and my coworkers in a bad situation. >> reporter: he did not learn the patient had the disease until after he got sick. >> pain all over. really bad headache. my legs i could not move them. and the disease spread to my knees. >> reporter: oakland police officer, who initially worked on the patient got sick. both are now permanently disabled. they say one dose of sypero and they would have been fine. >> that is where the hospital fell down on the job.

i'm gasia mikaelian. this is bay area news at 7:00. continuing coverage tonight of a four alarm fire that caused some heavy damage to a historic building atop pier 29 along the san francisco water front. it's our top story at 7:00. ken wayne is live along the embarkadero where fire crews are still at work at this hour. >> reporter: gasia, the fire was contained at 3:40 this afternoon. as you can see, the ladder truck is still pouring water on the structure and remains closed at the corner of lumbar street. the fire was reported at 1:50 this afternoon with large flames shooting through the roof of the two-story structure. at one point, part of the facade collapsed, so firefighters pulled back. >> pretty spectacular, the flames going through the roof. you can also see the facade has given way. the incident commander, he did a very good job of assessing the vulnerability of the structure and established what we call a collapse zone to make sure there was no one in front of the building. >> reporter: no one was hurt. one fire official conf

i'm gasia mikaelian. this is bay area news at 7. two months have now passed since an suv veerd off treat boulevard in concord and struck a father and daughter riding their bikes. today, concord police recommended to prosecutors that the 17-year-old driver face vehicular manslaughter charges in their deaths. witnesses said the white suv was speeding when it ran off the road, hitting and killing 41 fila monura and his 9-year-old daughter on april 7. the two and another daughter were out for a saturday bike ride. police tell us they've provided a mountain of evidence to the contra costa county district attorney's office. >> that it was beyond just somebody who was driving at the speed limit and was just momentarily distracted or looked down. in order to look at a case involving a higher degree of vehicular manslaughter, it has to have a degree of recklessness to that. >> the 17-year-old driver was released from juvenile hall a few days after the crash. >>> in el sorido, an elderly woman died after being hit by a bicyclist at an interse

. >> good evening, it's tuesday, june 5, i'm gasia mikaelian. this is bay area news at 7:00. a homicide suspect is behind bars tonight after being shot by alomeda county sheriff's deputies following a chase. it's a story we first brought to you at 5:00 and it's our top story at 7:00. john sosaki responded to the scene and is live to tell us what he learned about the suspect. >> reporter: this is where it all started, and we've learned that the suspect who's now in custody is 39 years old and has been known to the sheriff's office for quite some time. sheriff's deputies came to the house on the corner of queen and grove because they had heard that the man was there and they went to arrest him, and investigators say that's when they tried to hit him with his vehicle. he opened fire once and raced off to an apartment complex on the other side of 580 from here. using a police dog, deputies arrested him there. he was wanted for attempted murder for allegedly shooting a woman through a door at an apartment complex near here about a month ago. and for leading deputies on a high spee

i'm gasia mikaelian. this is bay area news at 7:00. bart trains are rolling again between san francisco and the east bay after a building fire adjacent to the tracks in oakland shut down for 12 hours, stranding thousands of people. commuter service was restored at 4:00 this afternoon. by 5:30, bart reported trains running normally in both directions. bart is promising extra service for another hour until 8:00 tonight. here's what caused all the problems, the 3-alarm fire that broke out at 2:20 this morning. the flames destroyed the building in west oakland. the building was under construction and no one was hurt, but the intensity of the heat and flames damaged the electrical components that keep bart trains running. it took hours for crews to repair the damage. the unexpected shut down across the bay caused an epic traffic jam. the morning commute was one of the worst in recent memory. cars jammed all routes leading at this time bay bridge as tens of thousands of people scrambled to find other ways to get to work, or school, or the us
