it is monday september 9th i am gasia mikaelian, this is bay area news, we begin at the fire at mt. diablo, it is called the morgan fire, this is the latest figures from cal fire, as of late this afternoon, just more than 3700 acres have burned and 100 homes were threatened and evacuations in place in the area. we have live report for you. we begin with julie, live in dublin with more on the fire fight. >> reporter: firefighters are getting ready to spend their second night up there in mt. diablo working on those homes from the flames. stood out the greens and the ground on the plains of mt. diablo, one o peaks of the region. cal fire latest number show that had the fire has burned more than 3700 acres and fire officials ordered evacuation for the people. a lot of people evacuated from their home t carrera is at the evacuation center now. >> reporter: we did juss from the sheriff's office that they'll let residence evacuate with proper ids going back to the home to retrieve essentials. >> scott says he's worried about his home. >> i was sitting at my rv watching niners win and the n

. -- captions by vitac -- >>> good evening, it's wednesday, september 18th, i'm gasia mikaelian. this is bay area news at 7:00. a stand off we've been following came to an end in san ramon when a shooting suspect surrendered. the man shot through his front door wounding a property manager during an eviction. and live from the scene, we have more from the situation there tonight, christen. >> reporter: the situation is starting to dial down here. you might be able to see one of the few remaining police vehicles that are still out here. we talked with the sheriff's office about 28 minutes ago. they were able to bring the three-hour, 45-minute stand off to a close without further blood shed. the sheriff's office used a vehicle to barb in the suspect's door. once that door had been breached, officers launched pepper gas inside. the suspect surrendered with m minutes. the whole incident started at 1:55 this afternoon when deputies tried to serve an eviction order. that suspect shot one person. they used gas ever trying to negotiate with the man inside. we continued to negotiate and en

i am gasia mikalian. >> and i am frank somerville. >> new information on a horrible crash in san franciscoweek. police released this picture of jennie zhu. she was driving 80 miles per hour when she slammed into the back of a car killing a teenage boy inside. ktvu's david stevenson is here with more about the suspect. >> we expect to speak to the father of the slain teen here at his son's high school. this comes as we learn more about the suspect in the crash, including her driving record. >> reporter: san francisco police identified the woman behind the wheel of the deadly crash as 58-year-old jennie zhu. police booked her saturday on one charge of vehicle manslaughter not involving drugs or alcohol with gross negligence and associated vehicle code violation. she posted $300,000 bail. her neighbors are finding the news hard to take. >> horrible it is a -- you know, not -- not the way -- >> reporter: police say jennie zhu was driving at speeds up to 80s miles per hour when she rear ended a van killing a student. >> everybody feels grief. >> reporter: the teen's mother remains in critical c

it is monday september 9th i am gasia mikaelian, this is bay area news, we begin at the fire at mt.t is called the morgan fire, this is the latest figures from cal fire, as of late this afternoon, just more than 3700 acres have burned and 100 homes were threatened and evacuations in place in the area. we have live report for you.

i am gasia mikalian. >> and i am frank somerville. >> that breaking news is out of san francisco. a woman was struck and killed by a city owned vehicle. news chopper 2 is live over the scene of the crash that happened before 2:30 p.m. this afternoon. >> in holly park. ktvu's john fowler joins us live with the latest on the investigation. john? >> reporter: thank you. we are here at holly park in san francisco. right now i want to show you the scene has been closed off. police are asking everyone to stay away. this video is from news chopper 2 after the woman was struck at 2:20 p.m. this afternoon. she was hit by maintenance truck. and run over. she apparently was there with a small child. she may have been sun bathing in the park. the driver fled the scene but arrested later somewhere near the park. i have with me now an officer of the san francisco police department. she tells me a green truck has been recovered and towed. what can you tell us what happened here? >> at 2:20 p.m. this afternoon we received phone calls from people saying a truck struck a woman. >> reporter: do you

. >>> gasia, oakland needs help in the streets and today the city got a shot in the arm from the government. it was a violent day in oakland. eight officers searched for but did not find a stabbing suspect. >> they got a suspect call over here of a guy walking around with blood on his hands. it looked like he might be doa. it appears to be a bottle. >> reporter: a few blocks away at the stabbing scene, , mendoza says that it was a domestic violence case where a man used a broken bottle to stab his girlfriend. >> through the department of justices office, the city of oakland will receive what is the nation's largest single cops grant this year. >> reporter: this morning oakland police and city leaders stood alongside federal officials to unveil a federal grant that will pay for 10 new officers officers for the city. >> there's a lot of crime, and i've been through a lot of families who's pain is hard to describe. that should not happen in america in the most powerful country in the world. >> reporter: the oakland police department currently has 614 officers nearly 200 fewer than the city had

>> reporter: gasia, the 49ers have a huge game this weekend.but at the practice facility, the players and their head coach couldn't avoid questions on a different topic. the 49ers are dealing with the fallout of this morning's arrest of star linebacker aldon smith. he was arrested on suspicion of dui after police say he crashed his truck into a tree in the silver creek neighborhood. he was also charged with possession of marijuana. smith was at practice today and seemed to be fine. this is not smith's first problem with the law. last year, he was busted for dui in miami and he was stabbed at a party in a south bay house. he's also named in a lawsuit by a man who says he was shot during another party at smith's house. harbaugh and some other players addressed it. >> i'm disappointed. and, you know, i felt like he needs to go to work, face his teammates, and, you know, soldier through it. >> sometimes stuff just happens. if anybody went looking through everybody's past, you'd find some stuff on everybody, even the people probably asking the quest

. >> and i'm gasia mikaelian. julie haener has the night off. we begin tonight with breaking news. news chopper 2 is over interstate 580, where a big rig burst into flames about 5:30 tonight. and that is blocking traffic in the westbound direction, near santa rita road in dublin. you can see the burned-out cab of the big rig. firefighters have put out the flames, but is going to take a while to clear the scene. and this is the result of that fire. huge backups. there are backups in both directions for drivers heading home tonight. and take a look at this. a viewer shot this photo with a cell phone camera a bit earlier this evening. you can see the flames fully engulfing the front of that big rig. we're still working to find out how that fire started and we'll let you know as soon as we get an update. >>> the oakland police department's been reporting anedoctal improvement in gang violence, but the department isn't even collecting data to back up its claims of success. at issue here are these two highlighted areas. one's in north oakland. the other is the fruitvale neighborhood. a j
