there's an area of town called gaston city. it's about a quarter of a mile off behind me. that's where authorities say they have recovered ten dead and two children. more than 100 people have been injured so far. a lot of stories, talking to some of the survivors. most of them say when they started to hear the sound of that freight train, it lasted two to three minutes long and even into a closet. they just huddled together with their loved ones and hope that the storm passed over. most of that storm was spared but as you can see, not everybody was so lucky. >> tyler, if you want to have your photographer again to go into that building behind you and tell us whether or not you know, was there anybody inside that building? it looks like a business there. it was early in the morning. was that an empty building or imagine if a lot of people had been at work and they were not able to get to a basement or underground or have been with their families. this could have been a lot worse. granted a lot of times we talk about how when these tornadoes or severe storms hit coming durin

you can see off in the distance gaston city. this is where ten fatalities have happened.hand side of your screen there is a house that is untouched and then you can see right next door, literally right across the street there are houses that have been destroyed. so you can see very specifically a very straight line of damage that this tornado left behind it in its path. there is destruction for a lot of parts here on the southeastern side of the city. obviously we have a strip mall here that we showed you before the commercial break, as well as a bank. very lucky, though. there is a senior home, a house of 75 seniors. we're told that did not sustain any damage. that's the good news. with ten dead, including two children and more than 100 injured so far in saline county, it's a very devastating storm. >> tyler, do we know the circumstances surrounding the two children that died? >> reporter: we don't know the circumstances surrounding the death. we also don't know the names of those yet. they may be releasing that information at 2:00 at a press conference here in harrisbur

city is dealing with crime? >> i was a big supporter of chief gaston. i think he will do a great job in the district attorney's office. part of me was sad to see him go from the police department. he had come in and started modernizing the department. it's technology -- a lot of different changes that needed to happen but were not happening until he came in and start of the department on the right path. it is critical that whoever the next chief of police is continue that modernization of the department. it will have benefits citywide. in my district, we have public safety challenges. the district is often viewed as a "safe district." we do have violence. we had a bunch of violence around delores park last year. there have been robberies in glen park and parts of the valley. there have been shootings in diamond heights. one of the challenges is making sure that the police department understands that even though we may not have the same crime levels as some neighborhoods, we still need attention from the police department. >> let's talk about the city's

gaston at a certain point. remember his name? david vann. you can't see, but if you look really closely, this is david vann, birmingham mayor, 1975 to 1979. he later became mayor of the city. when that film was made, he was nowhere near being made, because it was being made in the late '80s. what do you think of that quote? kind of cool, huh? a white southern lawyer saying that these sidewalks right here in the middle of the civil rights movement are as sacred to the united states as valley forge where the revolutionary army under george washington nearly froze to death. a white southern lawyer. saying that those sidewalks are as sacred ground for the united states of america as valley forge. martin luther king transformed david vann. he was a pretty good guy to start, but martin luther king transformed him. i have never seen a city deal as well with the complicated history or any place. here's the 16th street baptist church. you see the sign up there, top right. this is in the middle of the demonstrations. this is during the children's march. when the children's march started because all of the kids gathered in the church and then came down the stairs to the park across
