so on the golden gate yacht on the golden gate. so you're these cars that are heading northbound. you see they're applying their brake lights. they are also it looks like going to be at standstill heading that direction to know. yeah, that back. it's going to grow. but defect that we see no traffic heading over the golden gate bridge into san francisco means >> that you can't get onto the bridge because no cars are on the bridge. so it is down right now is is shut down by the chp is shut down by protesters for whatevew reason to you as a commuter doesn't really matter. the fact is, you can't get over the bridge. southbound 101, on the golden gate bridge is block. you can't get there. there's no traffic heading over the bridge right now. >> so if we go back to the video of the demonstrators on the on 8.80, in oakland, one of the banners that they have up there, you can see back there is a 15 that's april 15th just today. and this is all part of as we're learning a worldwide demonstration, a blockade the economies around the world. all in an effort to, you know, call for a free pale

the golden gate bridge continues with the jam. sergio showed us the activity, but still even though we saw a number of squad cars, we still have the back-up and the full closure for 101. no act as far as traffic volume goes. here is the san francisco side. there is the north bay side and that is coming from marin and toward the tunnel that comes out of the rainbow tunnel or the robin williams tunnel. that is the heart of where all of the activity goes across all lanes of the golden gate bridge. because they had to watch out for all of the activity, and then you know the lanes are restricted there. we saw that hook and ladder truck, they couldn't turn around. they had to back up and that might have been the vehicle that i saw making its way back into san francisco. they've made some arrests and then you have to clear all of the vehicles that are jammed up from the span itself. and then the folks jammed out of marin county. so that is over on this side of the bay. because they can't close on the golden gate bridge and a lot of folks

the golden gate bridge. that is one hour for anyone making that ride. if you have to get through this area , richmond-san rafael bridge will be your alternate or potentially public transit. as we heard from vern, trying to get someone to the airport, there are probably a lot of people in similar situations trying to travel on some of these major freeways this morning. the thing with the golden gate bridge, the span is not very long. it is very easy for them to close it quickly and traffic moves a lot slower. we have shifted over to a live look at 880 where you can see their working to separate these protesters from these barrels that they apparently chained themselves together through holes they made off to the side. this is not easy. >> we have seen for the last 45 minutes or so, paramedics are on scene because gianna, to your point, we don't know how these people are change to these barrels and how somewhat of a tube there that maybe barrels, if they are cemented to the ground were somehow fixed to the gro

right now, the golden gate bridge. alright, michael thomas reporting live for us. >> on 8.80, in the east the big protests going on right now, the golden gate bridge looks very quiet out there. but charles clifford, is there was there when the protest took over the golden gate bridge. charles? >> well, good afternoon. right now, i'm at the toll plaza here on the golden gate bridge where you can see behind me here. all lanes still closed if you look over to my left across the roadway, there you can see that the bridge district has closed down all northbound traffic headed out onto the bridge. and this protest is occurring about mid span in the southbound lanes. so those are closed as well. but in the last half hour, a lot of activity. we have a lot of highway patrol officer san francisco police department officers, other cruisers and the san francisco fire department coming off the bridge. also about half an hour ago, there was a golden gate transit bus went by with dozens of people on which we understand were the prote

so there is no movement on the golden gate bridge. this includes pedestrians andnd cyclists, as well. the backup spans for miles with no one going anywhere. we have seen arrests made this morning, about seven so far. multiple chp units on the scene as well as fire and police backups. really, no movement. >> ginger there at the golden gate bridge toll plaza for us this morning. okay. ginger, i know a lot has been going on in that area or, in some case, not a lot going on. talk about what you've been able to see and what you've been able to find out. >> reporter: well, speaking of those chp units, i'm told by someone that's still on the bridge that a new squadron of chp vehicles has just arrived. they are currently making arrests. all of the standalone protesters, they say, have been arrested. now, authorities are working to arrest those that have been connected to one another and their cars. so far, as far as the scene here on the golden gate bridge, it has not changed. it's pretty much been the same this morning since we've been here.

golden gate bridge remains shut down. our chopper is overhead. you see cars still blocking south lanes and a heavy law enforcement presence. they're standing by in the north bound lanes. for the most part, they have not moved in to remove some of the cars blocking traffic but they have started turning vehicles around, some of the people who got stuck in the mess. they're doing that at the end of the line on the bridge where they have a little room just north of the bridge by sausalito, turning vehicles around one by one. we have seen a few protesteers being detained. chp appeared to cuff a person that was in a yellow vest. you see them walking off the bridge. later another protester is led away by law enforcement, some of the 20 people confirmed arrested so far. this is a look from earlier where you see the protesters standing with the banner saying stop the world for gaza. i don't know about the world but certainly traffic on the golden gate bridge was stopped. we spoke with some of the commuters students commuters stuck in this. one told us he

now we're seeing one on the golden gate bridge. we've seen them try to shut down the port of oakland, but on their website for this, a 15 effort, they say there's a need to shift from symbolic action to those that cause pain to the economy. so that is really what today is all about for them. there are three other california cities on the list of cities where they plan to have these blockades, long beach, orange county and san diego. but obviously this expanded because it started here around 630. that's when they shut down 880. and then just after 8:00, that's when they started to shut down the golden gate bridge. so this is expanding, we're going to remain here to show you what's going on, but it seems like this is going to continue for a while as they try to get those people out, try to somehow cut them, from those big barrels, and then remove them here from the freeway. live in oakland. amanda quintana ktvu, fox two news. >> amanda, thank you from that live picture, we're going to go show you what it looks like on the traffic map

taking a live look now at a calm golden gate bridge. as we've been covering all evening, a huge traffic mess put a halt to this morning's commute into the city and out of the city with protesters shutting down the golden gate bridge completely. here's a look at that. about 3 hours in authorities started making arrests. the demonstrators there were protesting the war in gaza. dozens of activists stopped their cars and blocked all southbound lanes demanding the u.s. stop arming and funding israel. more than 20 people were arrested at golden gate bridge earlier today. >> and in the east bay, there were several protests along 80 in oakland. this is video from this morning showing the scene near the

gate that comes down. but tell us what you know, evan briana at this point, this person is now in custody of the police, but he's also being evaluated at the hospital. at the hospital there, i think ryan young said it's in dekalb county. and so that's the expectation. now, they're evaluation is going to take some time oh include a mental health evaluation. again, there's a lot that is unexplained about this incident at this point. this person drove up to that what is an employee entrance for that complex where the fbi building is or what the fbi field offices located? and tried to gain entry. they came out of the vehicle and tried to walk in to the complex. they were stopped by the fbi security people who help screen visitors to that to that complex. and so that's where this ended. this point again, from what we know. the person didn't make any statements, any threats. there was no expectation of a heightened threat at this fbi building. so it was certainly something of a surprise. and so what's what's gon

all lanes, though, back open now on the golden gate bridge. they were shut down after dozens of protesters locked themselves together into parked cars on the southbound lanes that was heading from marin county, the north bay into the city. and then oakland, protesters shut down all the northbound lanes on 8.80, at 5th avenue right near jack london square just about a mile away. they also blocked the southbound lanes on 80 at 7th street. protesters also blocked the southbound on-ramp to 80 at 7th street and our kron four's team coverage starts right now with our rob nesbitt. he's been on the scene there at 7th in 8.80, robbed during our coverage we had earlier in the day we watched the chp officers walks step by step slowly. those protesters off of 8.80, right to where you are. and we can still see that there is chp presence behind you blocking people from trying to get on 8.80. >> yeah. just team. when i first arrived here at 7th street and oakland, i arrive to what was protesters lined up with their bicycles, blocking the southbound entrance

the golden gate bridge is iconic.at is a prime time target if there was to be a potential danger or attack. law enforcement is looking at that extremely closely right n now. an improvised explosive device or anything that would threaten the bridge or the integrity of the bridges of preeminent importance right now, protecting on that bridge. for instance in san francisco. have any of these individuals been identified? have many of them been on the radar of law enforcement or intelligent communities in the recent past history? that is extremely important to law enforcement. you have your right to speak out. you don't have the right to inconvenience our cause danger. >> john: we are getting some spectacular pictures of the golden gate bridge in the marin county shoreline as we look at the 1.7-mile long span constructed in 1933 and all the cars that are sitting there going south bound for marin county into san francisco. it looks like what happened here is 3 cars coming in the south brown lane, they slowed down mid span.

today is the 154th anniversary since the founding of golden gate park. mayor london breed and other city officials kicking off that celebration earlier today at the conservatory of flowers by the way, it was the first building erected in the park back in 1879. the event included entertainment activities and, of course, the cutting of a birthday cake. let's talk more about the sprawling park with phil ginsberg, general manager of the san francisco recreation and park department. phil it's always a pleasure to see you this park. more than 1000 acres. i mean, it is really hard to imagine san francisco without golden gate park. >> it is. thank you. heather. happy birthday, golden gate park. this park is part of the city's soul. it's its lungs. it's in many respects, its heartbeat. it is the keeper of san francisco's story. and it is just a treasure. yeah. >> and this area for people at home, they may not know this was once miles and miles of sand dunes, and there were doubts that a park could actually be built there. >> this park was a horticultural miracle.

you were getting over the golden gate bridge this morning. this is what ultimately happened on the southbound lane side where they started to turn people back around. getting them back, presumably for a drive across the bay bridge and for san rafael to get to marin. we did speak to one of the organizers here who say it was a disruptive event, of course. there will be more. >> we are going to keep pushing until people pay attention as we know from our history, that people's actions work. they won't listen to us unless we hit them where it hurts, which is in the economic region. so we're going to keep pushing and keep disrupting. >> one interesting question coming out of this is a jurisdictional one, right? who manages the cases that are going to come off the bridge here. it's not like the bay bridge. pretty cut and dry. they went to the district attorney's office. it is not so clear in this case with the golden gate bridge and the federal authority here in the presidio, one thing that we will wait to see after yet another large-scale protest h
