what sticks out for you in these two years that you've had the gavel? >> well, when i took the gavel january 11, and realized what we were going to have to do, i renamed the committee the discipline committee. i said to senator boehner, i said, i ran to be chief, but you've got me in charge of the latrines. [laughter] but it has been a tough time. we came in with the commitment to radically cut spending and get ahold of fiscal reins. it fell on our committee's lap to do the serious work of writing and spending on the discretionary side. all the while, we said we have to deal with entitlements. we will deal with small numbers on the discretionary side, but you've got to deal with those big numbers on the mandatory side. and there has been an effort in the budget committee's side to do that. as it turns out, we had early on in that fight, led us to this sequestration problem which we have now. which we've got some. >> is the public sufficiently set for the severe cuts in the entitlement program? >> no, it's not. >> who do you see in this party that -- who

we hope, but if you are not here, you will get gavel-to- gavel coverage.ut want to see every aspect of the convention can watch that as well. >> what message do you want them to take away from your production? >> we will let the campaign speak to the messages of the campaign. we are going to do another student. is that ok? to engage youth in the democratic convention, we will continue a lot of the work we have been doing over the last year and a half, in gauging folks from all over the country. -- engaging folks from all over the country. we announced we were coming to charlotte with an e-mail from the first lady. she sought advice from folks about how we can use the convention to engage more americans. we got a huge input from young people around the world about how we can do this. the big piece was, and get us involved. give us opportunities to engage. we have done service products around, -- projects around the community. we have a youth council that will open public meetings next week. we have youth components of the program, which i am sure you will e

he came to me in 2004 and said i really want to cover the 2004 conventions gavel-to-gavel, and in thisdais -- day in age, you're not going to do that on the network. streaming video in 2004 was a fairly new thing for most of us, and so we started something called abc news now with the democratic convention in the summer of 2004 where peter jennings anchored gavel-to-gavel coverage of the conventions on streaming video that the internet was open to anybody possible that otherwise wouldn't be even possible. george is a terrific reporter, a great journalist, and he really embraced social work media and the networks aggressively. i do think that in the end, and this is really -- i've discoveredded through the process why i wrote the book. when i set out, i wanted to write the book because i saw things i wish other people could get to see. it is richer. it is harder. it is in many ways more valiant than what i appreciated great jumpism really was. as i've gone through the process, i realized there was a further related reason why i care. i don't want this to be nostalgia or left in the past

i'm old enough to remember gavel-to-gavel coverage. not saying they should do that. three or four nights every four years is not asking too much given there are people who don't have satellite and cable. >> scott in san diego, california. in "the washington post," ohio must reinstate weekend early voting. robert barnes writes a federal judge ruled friday that ohio must allow in person voting on the weekend before the presidential election, a victory for the democrats who claimed republican efforts to close down early voting were aims at discouraging voters, most likely who support president obama. the ruling is the second this week on ohio voting. ohio has allowed in person voting on the weekend before the election since 2005. and u.s. district judge did not offer an argument as to why the rules are changing now. the change included an exception for military voters and the ohio democrats say all voters should be allowed to vote on the weekend. back to the polls, reading, pennsylvania on the line for republicans. david on the washington journal, go ahead, david. >> go
