. >> what triggered san francisco's search over 30 years later was gavin newsom's election to the office of lieutenant governor. >> i put myself up as a candidate for the tenant governor, won, thanks to the overwhelming support of the city. >> that is when we try to look for someone to take over his final year of the mayoral term. >> it is clear we have to do something in san francisco. we have to pick a mayor. that job was not up to the voters but the board of supervisors. by a majority vote, supervisors are able to choose the interim mayor. that is when the fun began in city hall. who would he be? >> we needed to protect -- perfect the process so that once the board asked us for that process, we could actually have something in place that was well tested that we could provide to them. >> mayor newsom would be sworn in as lieutenant governor in early january. so the board of supervisors had barely two months after the november election to select an interim mayor to complete gavin newsom's term. but how would the board do this? san francisco's charter guided -- offered little guidance. >

on behalf of mayor gavin newsom, thank you for being here tonight.t is a great honor for me to be here tonight to celebrate with all of you our local heroes. i just want to recognize tosean elsbernd and supervisor ross mirkarimi. thank you for being here to celebrate with us tonight. on to our next local hero. it is my pleasure to introduce our second honoree, michael durant. michael joined the indian health center as a substance abuse prevention counselor. he was promoted in -- to department director. he earned his master's degree at san jose state university. he completed his undergraduate work in history with an emphasis on native american studies at the university of california at santa cruz. he was previously employed at the center for training and careers as a center for youth services, and after 18 years of substance abuse and several years of incarceration, michael decided to dedicate his life to helping youth and adults find alternative ways to deal with substance use. michael is of apache-chicano and dissent and said this very thing -- "und

so gavin, you have been out around athens speaking to middle class greeks. how much more can they take? >> i think that's the big question, one thing since i have been here maybe six weeks ago. how the mood has changed and the austerity plan can work, and this 350 billion euros whether that can be brought down. and as a result of a reduction of a property tax last week, a lot of middle class greeks are saying this is a step too far. and there is some resistance to paying that tax. and one question hanging over this, what new austerity measures are introduced. in the end will the greeks go along with that or resist? >> gavin, the americans have waded into the european debt crisis and that european leaders are behind the curve and acted too slowly. if they acted earlier, could the situation that greece faces now could be avoided? >> of course we could go back in history and there are people close to the greek government, and wondered if it would have been better if greece had defaulted in may, 2010. of course we are where we are now, and the question is if gre

>> the watershed moment was 2002 when gavin newsom passed care not cash. it turned things around and forced the city to think more about housing. that was a key movement in the right direction. >> let's talk about housing needs and what you think the board of supervisors should do. >> i was asked about this but a friend i grew up with who now lives in the peninsula. i was fortunate enough that i grew up in the district was able to afford in the district. the vast majority of the friends i grew up with in the neighborhood cannot stay in san francisco. we are really becoming a city that is either for the very rich or very poor. the middle class is losing out. that is the issue of one to focus the board on. addressing it is looking at projects like the park merced project with an open mind and consider how many middle-class units it will create. there's also the transportation impact of the project. what about the dislocation of the existing tenants? we have to value these things in a different way the we have in the past. >> let's talk about transportation.
