our europe editor gavin hewitt is in the capital. he says the vote is hugely important and to go against the bailout fund. >> all eyes tomorrow will be here on slovakia. all 17 members of the euro zone have to vote in favor of this much-increased, more powerful bailout fund. the signs are here that slovakia may say no. and that would lead to a delay, some infighting. the prime minister here tonight threatened to resign over it. why is all this happening? significant numbers of people here question why a relatively poor country like slovakia is involved in helping countries like greece. if there is a no vote, that will only add pressure on europe's leaders. you heard from robert that the european summit is going to be postponed. why is that? because international pressure is growing on europe's leaders this time to come up with really convincing answers. for instance, over what are their plans for greece? at the moment, we still do not know. >> gavin hewitt. u.s. president barack obama has spoken out on the tensions in egypt. >> that'

the prime minister has been speaking to our europe correspondent gavin hewitt. >> greece is a country that is remarkably rich that was however very poorly managed for a number of years. the poor management which we have been fixing in the past couple of years cannot hide the fact that that we have comparative advantages that are extremely beneficial for investors in greece. whether it is energy or alternative energy, shipping, agricultural or tourism, you're talking about heavy industries quote/unquote in which greece is the champion. this is not a bleak picture although we are in a very dark part of this dark tunnel. and the question is -- do we focus on attention ahead or do we start listening to anyone who predicts our demise? i choose to look ahead. i choose to move forward. we will not throw our hands up. we will not surrender or abandon the effort. we will fulfill entirely or commitments an i believe that in a year from now if we're sitting here discussing i can look straight at you in the eye, remember i told you this, it happened. >> can you convince those people for instance

well, our europe editor, gavin hewitt, is in athens at the moment. gavin, you've seen the troubles, you've seen the demonstrations. there's not going to be any letup here, is there? >> no, david, there isn't. i mean, it's a very noisy event, as you can probably hear. tens of thousands of people got up pretty early and headed down to the parliament here. the unions say 200,000 people were on the streets of athens. certainly it was one of the biggest demonstrations ever yet today, and there was clearly some violence. i think the difficulty for the government is this -- they may well get the votes tonight to push through these new austerity measures, but in the face of this, can they really implement these measures? i'm standing very close to the finance ministry. over the last few days, that key ministry has been occupied, and i think that is the question for the government. can they really deliver on their promises when such a significant part of the population clearly is not prepared to put up with further austerity? >> it's a great point for focus, g
