he could not have found anyone weekly more than gavin newsom. we still have more homeless in the city. if we need to have a mayor, a new mayor for my city, he must show us what brand he makes to clean the city. we need another new tourist to come in. the tourists give $30 million if you do not remember every year to the city. now, the tourists coming make big trouble for the homeless who sleep outside city hall. ladies and gentlemen, we need to be strong. man or woman, does not matter who is going to be our mayor, but i agree with many of our supervisors that the city still has homeless, and many of them come from other states, other cities. we need jobs and taurus and to clean our -- we need jobs and tourists and to clean our city, and we need someone who has the courage to clean the mess that gavin newsom and willie brown left behind. thank you. supervisor chiu: next speaker. >> walter paulson. ♪ when you pick a successor meier, no board could do it better -- when you pick a successor major -- when you pick a successor mayor all i ask you, son

you could have never told me that one of my proudest acquaintances in my entire life is mayor gavin newsom. [applause] mayor newsom: thank you all for taking the time to be here. it is a pretty remarkable thing to look back. yes, angela, at the mayor's race in 2003. for those of you wondering what we're talking about, angela and i ran against each other. it was a time of tremendous controversy and frustration where everybody was pointing fingers in this town. i give mayer brown as a lot of credit for the investment he made, and i do not think he has ever legitimately got a credit for the investment he made into the homeless delivery system, but he was probably best known for his frustration when he said that there's just no way a city can solve homelessness. at the time, a lot of us jumped on him and said what an audacious and outrageous thing, but i have come to appreciate the frustration. at the same time, i also appreciated we needed to move in a different direction, and so much of that campaign was organized around the issue of poverty eradication, and an expression of that frustration

gavin newsom has been a leader of the environment before it was the sexy thing to do.been responsible for putting solar power at moscone center; responsible for putting power at san francisco international airport; responsible for putting solar power at the waste water facility in the bayview hunter's point. he will be responsible for putting power on our libraries, on our schools, and everywhere possible in the city and county of san francisco. we're very fortunate that this mayor has been the first mayor to create a climate action plan that will reduce the green house emissions by 20 percent by the year 2012. this mayor has also been a leader and innovation and we're looking at creating -- in harnessing paddle power below the golden gate bridge and that will be done under gavin newsom's leadership. so please put your hands together and give a warm san francisco welcome to our mayor, my mayor, gavin newsom. >> thank you. newly elected so i've got to now call him mr. president. thank you, president brooks. i want to thank the commissioners for being here and of course

first, we wanted to congratulate mayor gavin newsom on his election. before he leaves office, the commission is pleased to honor and recognize his work and commitment to small business. the commission appreciates the comprehensive approach to running and governing san francisco. to his focus on improving our schools to public arts, from healthy foods to a healthy environment, from gay marriage to sunday streets, all of these initiatives have a great benefits to the economy and small business. this evening the small business commission wants to take the time to reflect on a few key initiatives that have helped sustain the diverse economy of san francisco's small business, and that is quite a few. he co-sponsored legislation that -- and he established an economic development unit with the neighborhood initiative and the communities benefit district. we have seen the great results of the neighborhood marketplace initiatives, and it has been a critical program to maintaining commercial corridors during this economic crisis. in 2007, they created the small

on behalf of mayor gavin newsom, thank you for being here tonight. it is a great honor for me to be here tonight to celebrate with all of you our local heroes. i just want to recognize tosean elsbernd and supervisor ross mirkarimi. thank you for being here to celebrate with us tonight. on to our next local hero. it is my pleasure to introduce our second honoree, michael durant. michael joined the indian health center as a substance abuse prevention counselor. he was promoted in -- to department director. he earned his master's degree at san jose state university. he completed his undergraduate work in history with an emphasis on native american studies at the university of california at santa cruz. he was previously employed at the center for training and careers as a center for youth services, and after 18 years of substance abuse and several years of incarceration, michael decided to dedicate his life to helping youth and adults find alternative ways to deal with substance use. michael is of apache-chicano and dissent and said this very thing -- "u

on june 29, 2004, mayor gavin newsom announced the plan, and we are standing here today still with that plan. one of the things that came out of the new administration that i considered to be the most important program in the united states of america is project homeless connect. a hand for the mayor. [applause] while the 10-year plan to end chronic homeless this is giving people permit supportive housing while even today, we need to address the issue of mental health, mental illness -- that is the promise of permanent supportive housing, the support of part, the mental health, and now that my best friend is governor and one of my closest friends is the lieutenant governor, we are going to focus on mental health for the state of california. [applause] i want to introduce some of the original members of that committee. i want you to know everybody told us we could not do it, and as we are standing here today, i believe it is very close to 4000 people have gotten a prominent supporter of housing and are off the streets when they were chronically homeless, meaning they had been on the stree

-- listens with full years -- listens with full ears like gavin newsom. who helps us get through to something that will satisfy the community. i cannot thank you end up. out of all of this, we became very good friends as well. supervisor maxwell, we are finally here, and we are celebrating. city attorney, we have phone calls that were sometimes not pleasant, but we are here again. but the people i want to thank is the community. you hosted this plant for so long a time. you also were very patient over the last 12 months, and i apologize because you see our goal, which is to make sure the supply to san francisco is secure, so we are finally here, and i thank you for your patience. we have served a notice of termination of reliability of this plant effective january 1.
