governor gavin newsome says that despite the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, california has found itself with the budget surplus this time last year we announced a 54.3 billion dollar projecled sort. >> shortfall. today. we are now seeing a projected 75.7 billion dollar budget surplus. so remarkable turnaround. the credits california's recovering economy for the unexpected windfall. newsome also says california will be getting about 26 billion dollars from the federal government, meaning the state. we'll have more than 100 billion dollars in extra funds. a large portion of the surplus will go to education and the paying down of deaths as required by law. but the governor wants to use 12 billion dollars to provide direct stimulus payments to about 2 thirds of all californians that would include $600 payments to all taxpayers making up to 75,000 a year who did not receive a stimulus payment the first time around $500 direct payments to families with dependent and $500 to undocumented families. the plan would also provide billions of dollars to help people pay their rent and utility bills.
