gavin newsom has been a leader of the environment before it was the sexy thing to do. he has been responsible for putting solar power at moscone center; responsible for putting power at san francisco international airport; responsible for putting solar power at the waste water facility in the bayview hunter's point. he will be responsible for putting power on our libraries, on our schools, and everywhere possible in the city and county of san francisco. we're very fortunate that this mayor has been the first mayor to create a climate action plan that will reduce the green house emissions by 20 percent by the year 2012. this mayor has also been a leader and innovation and we're looking at creating -- in harnessing paddle power below the golden gate bridge and that will be done under gavin newsom's leadership. so please put your hands together and give a warm san francisco welcome to our mayor, my mayor, gavin newsom. >> thank you. newly elected so i've got to now call him mr. president. thank you, president brooks. i want to thank the commissioners for being here and of

without further delay, it is my pleasure to introduce mayor gavin newsom, who has some spectacular newsmayor newsom: i think this is the completion of your first week on the job. melanie was with the speaker's office doing similar work, so that we could be successful in san francisco and but in a position to make a lot of the announcements we have been making bore over the last number of years. i happen to think this is a big deal. i think that other cities across the country that struggle to deal with the issue of their diversion rates with landfills that are literally filling up, that are becoming floating regattas of landfills that are being pushed up and down rivers and across the coast and around the continent, that this represents an important milestone, the cities can think differently and act differently and do some of them substantially differently -- do something substantially differently as it relates to their waist. what we know, we do not think, is that 1 million to 1.5 million people are moving into the urban cores and consuming roughly 80% of the earth's natural resources

a new poll released today showed gavin newsom's lead in the race for lieutenant governor is dwindlingewsom now holds a four point lead over republican april moldanado 39% to 35%. when you take into account the margin of error, the race really too close to call. obviously this is a negative trend for mr. newsom. he had a nine point lead over maldonado in july. the race for california senate seat, barbara boxer's lead appears to be growing. polls suggest that boxer leads republican challenger and former ceo carla fiorina. in july, the race was deadlocked. boxer began running ads a day before polling. given the timing, the poll numbers are not surprising. with less than two months, the race for governor keeps getting tighter. jerry brown and meg whitman are deadlocked. pretty remarkable. tied at 18%, the numbers could change after next week. that's when the two candidates face off for the first time. the debate is on tuesday at uc davis. on october 12th, nbc, we're higher at nbc bay area will host our own debate between whitman and brown. tom brokaw will moderate. you can see it here sta

now would like to introduce a friend of mine and no stranger to all of you, san francisco mayor gavin newsom, who is going to discuss what things have been going on right here in san francisco with this program. mayor newsom: thank you for your stewardship and leadership in bringing us all together. i thank all the mayors that are here and all of you for taking the time to be here. from our perspective, there are few things more important than this. at the end of the day, what we are really talking about, what we are organizing around is job creation and economic development, reducing the costs not only to government, but reducing the cost to individual businesses, large and small, that want to reduce their energy bill at the same time we advance our environmental principles and advance our collective goals. as many of you know, san francisco has a low global climate action plan. basically all that is is the formal plan that 3043 other mayors -- at 1043 other mayors have signed to robot greenhouse gas unless it -- emissions to 1990 levels by 2012. we have done that through -- in small part i
