. >> o'donnell: my "cbs this morning" colleague gayle king was a personal friend of maya angelou. i know you knew her for nearly three decades. what will you miss most? >> yes, i do, i do, i do. we have been thinking about it a lot today, those of us who know her and love her. and i will miss most her voice and her conversation. norah, there wasn't one time that you spent with maya that you didn't feel better, you didn't want to be better when you left her house. oprah and i were there last month, she was working on what now turns out to be her last book about encounters and she read part of the book to us and her voice was so deep and so resonant. i was talking-- i talked to family numbers morning. she went to bed last night. she was laughing and joke yesterday. she was making plans for a 4th of july party. and, you know, she was fine at 5:00 in the morning, and by 7:00 she was no longer with us. she had no intention of leaving- - we all knew this day was coming, norah, we just didn't know it would be today. she had been fragile for so long so we were expecting it, but not today.

we continue our appreciation of maya angelou with gayle king.a great friend of mine. she and maya knew each other more than 30 years. she has called the poet and teacher one of a kind in all the best ways. gayle is co-host of cbs this morning and much more than that. i am pleased to have her with me at this time knowing the depth of her feelings about maya angelou. i thank you. >> it's been a very interesting week, charlie. the first day came as we had just gotten off the air and you sort of get through that. the next day, after watching all the tv coverage and seeing your friend's name with the birth date and end date of her death and then to see people going to her house and laying flowers at a house you have been to many times was very, very hard. >> charlie: tell us the maya you knew. >> well, i was thinking about this because what is it like to admire somebody as a kid and then you meet them and then you become friends, so friendly you see them in your pajamas, so friendly they're in the kitchen cooking for you, that they're asking you your

former president clinton called her a treasure and gayle king was a good friend. gayle? >> i was. i knew her for close to 30 years. i have to say, guys it's even tougher today than it was yesterday to know you won't hear the voice, the conversations are the wisdom of maya angelou. she died very quietly in her sleep yesterday morning. she was a writer of extraordinary grace, a champion for justice, an inspiration to millions but what she was most proud of about all else of being a teacher. outside maya angelou's house in winston salem, north carolina a memorial has sprung up. she died wednesday morning. cause of death has not been released. >> you may trod me in the very dirt but still like dust i'll rise. >> reporter: president barack obama, who awarded angelou with the medal of freedom said "the voice he found helped generations of americans and inspired the rest of us to be our best sells. oprah shared her feelings "she moved through the world with unshakeable calm confidence and a fierce grace. i loved her and i know she loved me. i will profoundly miss her." angelou was 86 but

gayle king is here. good morning. >> good morning, charlie. happy friday. >> we begin with another near disaster in the sky. official says two airbus a-23 jets crossed paths at take-off and came within a second or two of hitting each other. >> it happened two weeks ago. jeff pegues is in washington where an investigation is under way. jeff, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. and good morning to our viewers in the west. with passenger planes sometimes traveling at more than 500 miles an hour, there is very little room for error. this appears to be another case where an air traffic controller made a mistake and put two passenger jets on a collision course. just after 10:00 p.m. on may 9, two united aircraft prepared for take-off. flight 601 heading for vancouver. air traffic control instructed the pilot to take off. at the same time another united flight, 437, had already departed for mexico city on another runway. the vancouver-bound flight was also told by air traffic control to turn right, putting it directly in the path of flight 437.
