we actually were south along the gaza border when that came in. but you've got these constant rocket attacks coming in on various southern towns and cities. and you know, you talk about the impact on the hospitals. even here on the israeli side, what they did in tel aviv, in ashkelon where we were, you know, yesterday we were sort of caught in the midst of a massive rocket strike. i mean, there were dozens of them. dozens upon dozens coming in. some of them got through. and some of them got through to the city of ashkelon near that gaza border where we were. we went and found where one of the strikes was, an apartment building, and another was at this hospital. and the hospital had been hit. now, the hospital's still functioning, obviously. it is still a crucial place for people to go to. 70 people went to the hospital where i was today just yesterday from those strikes near ashkelon along the gaza border. so the iron dome, as successful as it is, you still had 70 injuries just yesterday. they had 650 people come to that hospital in ashkelon, jake

let's bring back nic robertson right with the israeli border with gaza. you get the sense that israel has gained control of the israeli communities right near the border? >> reporter: regained or regaining. it is hard to tell. we're just two and a half miles to the border at gaza. there was a semi cease situation there as well. perhaps a little further from one of the communities that was understood for civilians to be under siege there. we haven't hear the gunship in the last 15 or 20 minutes, perhaps. it was quite prevalent over the previous hour which does seem to indicate that the fight that the helicopter was supporting troops on the ground in is perhaps over. it does feel as if potentially some of those situations are being eased. but really, in terms of security here, that area, this police check point here, is still considered an active combat zone. we haven't been here given an all-clear that it is safe to go in there as of yet. the sort of battle tempo that we can hear has diminished. we are seeing bigger explosions on the horizon behind me. tho

israel's prime minister benjamin netanyahu visited the troops gathered at gaza's border today. coming, he told them. are you ready? the israeli army has been pounding gaza from here across the border and also from the air. israel says it doesn't deliberately target civilians, and that this is directed at the people who do. today, israel said it had killed the organiser of last weekend's attack. he was released from an israeli jail more than a decade ago in a prisoner exchange deal with hamas. israel says it was he who planned the attacks on communities like this. gunmen arrived there last saturday, caught on a security camera, relaxed, unhurried and well—prepared. they brought everything they needed to kill and kidnap large numbers of people. grenades, gaffertape, plastic cable ties. three members of one family are still missing among them, carmel and her sister—in—law. their family home shattered. it looks like indiscriminate violence, but it wasn't. this was a targeted attack. some of the people who lived here are now thought to be just a few miles away inside gaza, a differen

gaza. let's talk about the northern border.k us through what happened there already and what is potentially a danger there. >> so that, and we'll zoom here. here's what we are looking at in the lebanon border and it is a hezbollah stronghold. this is where they are the strongest and just like in gaza where you're looking at distances of a few hundred meters and it's the exact same distance and the israeli community is right on the border and the lebanese community is right on the other side of the border and hezbollah took responsibility for firing several mortar rounds for several bunkers and outposts there. israel retaliated and the fear is that that back and forth has ended and the fear is what could come if hezbollah becomes involved in a larger fight because they are exponentially more powerful and weaponry that hamas and gaza. something like 140,000 unguided rockets and 10,000 guided missiles that at least have some measure of precision. the concern here is that if israel decides to carry out a ground incursion and that s
