we earlier saw a lot more light in gaza city. it's a major city.le chunks of gaza city look like they've lost power. unclear if they lost power because of israeli air or naval strikes or artillery strikes or because the generators just went down this time of night, approaching 1:00 a.m. local time. karl penhaul is monitoring gaza city for us. tell us what you're hearing and seeing is right now. >> right now, we're hearing israeli drones overhead. that's a very distinctive sound. a little bit like a large lawn wer. weak hear those overhead. we're also seeing illumination flares dropping down through the night sky in gaza. that lighting up much of the area around us. the area of most activity tonight, the closest we've seen in the last three weeks really only about 500 yards from our bureau from the vantage point where we are at. what we first hear is the sound of an artillery shell firing out. and then an explosion o motion up in the air. that is a smaller explosion sending out this illumination flare. and then if you listen carefully, there's the d

cnn's karl penhaul live for us in gaza city. you've been watching this above your heads, starting to multiply. what are these flares? >> reporter: yeah, right now, brooke, there is a lot of action going on, especially along gaza's eastern border with israel. that is what you see over my shoulder. that is where you see those flares going up in the sky. those were illumination flares. and if we look at those, that green, eerie, night video footage we saw of israeli troop movements last night, you'll see none appear to have night vision goggles on. it could be they're putting up illumination rounds so the israeli troops as they advance forward into gaza can see where their targets are, and where they need to push in. it is certainly an indication, though, that a large troop movement is under way. we did see flares go up last night, but on a fairly restricted part of the border. now we're seeing this on a much larger stretch of the eastern border, indicating that more troops are coming across that border. now, throughout the last hou

i was with the family in gaza city who has 55 people staying in their apartment but they have been without power and water for 4 days. much of gaza lost power last night and that is just our doing -- adding to an already ethical situation of regular bombardment and increasing shortages. what about the fighting -- does hamas have the support of the population behind it? war --le are currently are credibly war weary and have been battered by intense bombardment and increasing casualty rate. situation before the war was a situation of relative quiet while the blockade of gaza is maintained. as long as the demands are for the ending of the blockade and the freeing of business, something that touches every palestinian family -- freeing of prisoners, something that touches every palestinian family, there will be support for continued resistance until those demands are achieved. for people in gaza life is unbearable otherwise. while people have fled their and places have been turned into intense guerrilla battlefields, people would like to see this and, they will support palestinians fighting on

it's been an intense few hours for residents of gaza city. bring us up to speed as to what has been happening and what you see on the ground. >> it's been an intense night and morning. thousands have been fleeing. in the morning, from 5 o'clock in the morning, we left around s seven, and we saw many walking towards us, carrying children, cars with white flags, trying to make sure they did not get hit from above because there's a lot of air strikes and artillery. that is the main use that israelis are using. we went to shifa hospital, the biggest hospital in the gaza strip , and a steady stream of ambulances coming in, bringing in the wounded and dead. we saw a dead lady with severe injuries to her head. we saw the elderly, it's indiscriminate. han civilians, a -- many civilians, a more weegean doctor. told us that it is the worst he has seen it, it's a massacre, israelis are indiscrime nantly firing. israelis will tell you that is where hamas hides its rockets and tunnel systems, it's a devastating impact that is happening on the civilians. p

correspondent ben wiedman is joining us from gaza city. israel says it's investigating the killing of these four boys on the gaza beach. hamas says it's a war crime. tell us what happened. >> reporter: what we understand is that this happened at about 4:00 in the afternoon, but before i get to that, wolf, we're hearing that more phone calls have been received by those areas that had received phone calls from the israeli military yesterday ordering them to leave those neighborhoods and go to gaza city because shelling was a growing possibility there, but as these four boys found out, even gaza city is not safe. they were killed on the beach wednesday afternoon when the israeli military targeted gaza's harbor. the four boyses,is mail, zakaria, ahmed and mohammed were cousins from the extended family ranging in age from 9 to 11. they were rushed to gaza city's shiva hospital, but it was too late. a spokesman says theis dent is being carefully investigated and that preliminary results indicate, quote, the target of the strike was hamas terroris

carl is there live in gaza city. we have been hearing multiple explosions coming out of gaza this evening. what's going on now? >> reporter: absolutely, don. that has been pretty much the patent for this evening after night fell. what we saw when a lot of israeli illumination rounds lighting up the night sky over gaza city. that continued for about two hours. we heard the constant rounds overhead. because it is a moonless night on the gaza strip, those illumination rounds were being sent into the air so that the drones that are equipped with high resolution cameras could do their work, for apparent targets down on the ground. after that had been going on for about two hours, then the air strikes came in. we got the sound and the pictures from call. nose went off from our office, about 500 yards away. let's take a quick look at those. you can see just how powerful those explosions were. i pause for just a second because what i'm wary of right now is that we can continue to hear israeli f-16 fighter jets overhead. and i

we are going live now for us in gaza city. it is simple to read out the numbers but not giving a face of the suffering there. is there a way to gauge how the people are fairing? >> when you speak to them, they'll tell you, they are terrified. the shelling is picking up again and it is a psychological thing that they are living in fear and they don't know where to go and they are saying we have nowhere to go. they have tried to stay family but they are not feeling safe. people are extremely worried. we visited one of the villages and the areas on the border on this front line, if you will, and that gives a sense of how they are feeling. death succumbs the air here. you hear the sound of a drone. this is a border town and no one is feeling safe. >> every house has hundreds of people fleeing their homes, no food, no water and we can't go any where. no one is taking care of us. i hope what happens to us it is going to happen to all of the ar ar arab countries. >> we were met with people running away. there is panic here. we are be

ben is marching to gaza city. ben, what did you see unfold today? >> well, what i saw was fairley early in the morning, thousands object not hundreds, thousands of people fleeing from the district east of gaza city, toward gaza itself. i saw people walking without shoes, carrying their children, carrying very little in the way of possessions. when i spoke to them, they're clearly many of them in can should. they talk about dead bodies in the streets, house after house being destroyed. now, an hour and a half ago, the death toll according to the palestinian ministry of health from this bombardment, the death toll was 13. now it's probably well over that. in fact, we understand that ambulances cannot get inside of that part of gaza because of the heavy shelling. the main hospital here in gaza apparently is full. their people have gone to take refuge there because they think that's the safest spot. the morgues are full to overflowing. their bodies laid out within the hospital as well as the wounded, it's a scene of utter pandaemonium there. >> ben, tha

residents were trapped east of gaza city. nicole johnson is in gaza and witnessed the shelling throughout the night. >> reporter: the eastern part of gaza was hit hard on saturday night. it was the heaviest tank shelling since israel started its ground operation. flares hit up the sky. tank shells slammed into people's homes. >> white, white. we can hear shells and rockets falling on the streets and homes. they are walling everywhere. we had no electricity, everything has been cut off. >> for a few hours ambulance vehicles couldn't reach some neighbourhoods. the attack was so intense, it wasn't safe to go there. trrgets the red cross can't rasp the area, it's too dangerous. people are stuck at home. some fled to u.n. schools in safer areas. we are stuck of the the streets are empty. all you hear is shelling. we are living in fear, terrified. there are 18 of us in one room. it's my whole family, we are stuck, and the kids are crying. >> after a while emergency crews started to reach the area, which had been heavily shelled. >>

richard engel has more from gaza city. >> reporter: today the heaviest israeli bombardment of the ground offensive against the gaza strip yet. horrific scenes today in the neighborhood here just to the east of gaza city. bodies in the streets. women and children killed. dozens killed according to the palestinian health officials. they are calling it a massive assault. we are told it began when israeli troops early this morning began to push into the area. israel says this is an area hamas used to launch rockets into israel and also where hamas has tunnels to infiltrate into israel. and the israeli armored vehicles advanced into the densely-crowded neighborhood. one of the vehicles was hit by a shoulder-fired missile. israeli reinforcements were sent in to cover those reinforcements there was a massive bombardment, artillery fire, tank fire, air strikes. >> throughout the operation we met extensive resistance on behalf of the terrorists and they responded. >> one palestinian medical official said what we are seeing is the beginning of a war crime. there was an attempt to call a cease-fire

well, for five hours the streets of gaza city and gaza strip focused on people for the first time. this attack started on gaza. afterwards people started to go back to their houses, in a rush, bus the fire started again, and israelis were shelling everywhere through the gaza strip. five kids were killed by children. three of the same family. they were on the roof of their house, killed by a knock on the roof which israel considers as a warning to the palestinians before they bomb the houses with them, with an f-16. >> warning shots september by israel? >> yes. which was actually condemned by the amnesty international, considering it's not an effective way of warning the palestinians for bombing them afterwards, with an f-16. they were killed - two kids followed them. during the night. israeli tanks and there were centered or lined up through - around the gaza strip on the borders. they did some ground invasion. it was only short operations, and clashes between them. so far no ground invasion happened yet. >> this is the ground offensive which has begun. we hear at the moment that i

the health ministry says at least 13 people were killed in an artillery attack in eastern gaza city. another 200 people are reported wounded. hundreds of people fled from the area after several large explosions. the attack come just hours after israel declared it was stepping up its military offensive in gaza. >> we heard ben wedeman saying

killed hadadults been displaced from the neighborhood in east gaza city. he had left his home after it was bombed by the israeli military, killing his mother, 78 years old. he had fled to this neighborhood in west gaza to avoid the israeli bombings. he wrought with him 13 members of his family, and despite that, he died yesterday in this attack. it is not just that civilians are being killed by these israeli bombs, but civilians trying to flee are also dying. the israeli military last night sent out recorded messages to residents in various neighborhoods telling them to evacuate their homes. 44% of theeady after gaza strip has been declared a military buffer zone. there is literally nowhere for people to go. there are over 200,000 displaced by the u.n.'s own count. if you go to homes in gaza, dozens will be sitting in apartments, unfinished schools. over 170,000 people are being hosted. there is literally nowhere for people to go and it seems there is nowhere safe to be. sharif, as he said, the hospital will start on monday. you have been every day. what is
