gazebo is gone, unfortunately. there's also plenty of flooding damage. the downtown area remains shut down, you cannot travel on the roads between 62nd street and the inlet. they're going to reassess things. crews are out, kind of getting a feel for the damage, deciding when they can let folks back into their homes, but there was significant flooding, several feet of water in homes and on the roads down there. when we drove through this morning, it looked like most of the waters had receded so that it was just several inches at this point. but there again there are crews out there looking at the damage. the u.s. coast guard has restricted the bay, so boats cannot access the bay at this point and they are working to see when they'll lift that restriction. route 50 remains closed heading into town. the road 90 bridge has been reopened. so other than that, just sort of assessing the damage right now, trying to find out when folks can return to their homes, cleanup will begin. very heavy winds, again, the rain is light

at the island no sign of the dock and gazebo. the town hasn't seen a storm like this in more than 30 years, not since hurricane gloria. on edgewater street homes built over the bay took a beating. >> this was completely open when i got here. >> reporter: megan finn returned home to discover water leaking in and worse, the hurricane damaged the pilings holding up her family's home. this cap here on the bay appears to be sinking. you can look up here and see the ceiling beginning to crack and this corner seems to be shifting. >> we have a diver coming in to look at it and the back of it does look compromised. >> reporter: along the boardwalk the seawall held up, but there was no protection for the town's landmark fishing pier wiped out by the pounding waves. >> the pier didn't survive so well. we did lose the key portion of the pier, probably about 100 feet of the pier, due to the pilings buckling. >> reporter: the national guard evacuated about 50 people during the storm. most of them are people who failed to leave areas where man

as i walk past the gazebo and walk toward the surf, the surf and the beach erosion are what they're worried to the boardwalk and the hotels and businesses along here. just a short time ago when it was high tide, this surf was pretty hellacious. it was coming up right about where i'm standing and washing completely past the dunes here and up toward the boardwalk. there's a lot of sand on the boardwalk. what they're worried about is beach erosion. earlier this year they expanded this beach. they reconstructed part of it with the army corps of engineers. they built it out about 300 feet toward the ocean. and they said if they hadn't done that right now, this boardwalk might be pretty much shot, because 20 years ago a nor'easter came and pretty much splintered this boardwalk apart. they're worried about it because of course this boardwalk is big for tourism here and summer visitation. and they are very concerned about whether it will hold up. they said if they hadn't expanded this earlier this year, then this could be pretty much torn apart right now. but they are worried about it because the s
