ge's -- you know, you got a few thousand people that deal with regulation. it can be the difference between profitability and nonprofitability. when you run up the cost of health insurance -- i mean, we're talking about today, health insurance costs go up 10%. it's a whole lot easier for a great big business to spread that across than it is for a small business. in fact, how does the small businessman hire more people when he's being threatened with a $1.5 trillion tax increase -- largest tax increase in american history, falling largely on employers -- and he doesn't know the cost of his health insurance or his obligations to provide it and then finally under dodd/frank, what the government's going to do to the credit of people like that. we're just kind of guessing as we go along. so, they have a harder tomb getting credit. they have a harder time keeping more of what they earn because of their tax situation. >> yeah. you talked about it. i can tell you that the university of mississippi, mississippi state, southern mississippi, great schools. high-tech sc

i remember when david choice, the head of the ge aviation came for the -- dated joyce, the head of ge aviation came for the opening, and somebody said to him we put the places many blockers here as we were supposed to. that is lockers for the employees that work there. we spend a couple of hours there at the plant said the managers spent some time with david, and as we walked out digit plant. the managers spend some time with david, and as he walked out he said we're going to sell all of the lockers. not only have they filled them, they have expanded since then, and they built another sister plant in south mississippi. it is about 20 miles from the university of southern mississippi. part of, i think about success in manufacturing in the united states is a strong tie with higher education i am going to talk a little bit about work- force training in our community colleges, the lead me mention first our universities. the university of southern mississippi, which is in hattiesburg, for more than 30 years has had a polymer institute. now, those of you did not know what polymers are shoul

it's not that every ge job is going to go in the u.s. but i think to a certain extent at points in time there's just too much callousness around it. i think we have to know that -- >> is that a way of saying like an in-sourcing initiative where there would be greater demands on businesses and that the government does play a role? andrew, is that appropriate, something you can live with? you accept the idea that old lays san jose fair arguments have to be put aside? >> i think like jeff and i think jim will agree. i think the context of the question is completely wrong. i have open border competition and this is the most open border country out there. so the ideals of free trade have to stand. why are you making markets based on false intervention. i'm competing with people subsidized around the world. countries are competing like companies, creating incentives. all the emerging countries wonder what we have. german does it, too. my home country of australia does it, too. we know it's not a level playing field. we know where, if you like,

i came to work for ge in 1982. for roughly 20 years if you look at global costs, materials were inexpensive, and the largest piece in your cost structure tended to be labor. we lived in a deflationary time. . we live in a more inflationary time the were the cost of materials are the biggest cost of the income statement. as a result, i think it's -- i think it makes manufacturing owning your own supply chain very different today. that is the way we look at our business. ge has always been good at manufacturing. we have a strong focus to control our own supply chain and we think this is going on around american business at the same time. we see good growth in the monthly jobs numbers in manufacturing. go back. in ge, we have created 11,000 manufacturing jobs since 2009. we have 16 sites that are either new or been refurbished. we have a strong focus of american manufacturing. i thought i would just tell leaving yet, and then i have some local guys here this week. we are basically moving appliance manufacturing from m
