success of ge. now you're in boston. how will you judge boston as an ecosystem and contributor to the ge family and what do we have to do to be in the top 20% of contributors as a city across the world? >> first i'd say it's -- it's a two-way street. all right? so first here's -- i think what we can do for you. clearly, the economics, the jobs, things like that, you know, the -- i always tell people the most important thing any company can bring is competitive spirit. you know, we want to win. we win. and we want to bring that competitive spirit for what we do, so we want to bring that. our people are -- ge is a working person's company. our people give back to the community. they know what it means to go to public high schools, they know what it means to volunteer in hospitals and things like that so i think you'll find us generous in labor and town. and so i think those are the things we can bring to the city. now, the schools and the startup ecosystem in boston is amazing. right? more than 50 uni

it's clear what's in this for ge. they had a $5 billion digital business last year planning for $15 billion by 2020. how do you make this work for microsoft and boost the other cloud businesses as well. >> we are right here at a partner conference at microsoft. we are a platform company. when we think about what a platform company does, it creates an opportunity for other software and other platform companies. they are building out their own platform. it creates a huge opportunity for the partners at this conference to be able to build the internet of things and industrial internet solutions. as part of the solutions, they would wire in microsoft dynamics, office 365 and all of the other partner solutions. to me, it's that combination of platform capabilities that i think will shape the industrial internet. >> can we think of it being a potential industrial and enterprise on ramp to microsoft's full cloud in a similar way that linkedin would be an individual consumer on ramp to things like 365. >> the professional net

while ge has managed to show a lot of strength in many of its u.s. industrial sectors, results have still been weighed down by a lot of weakness in two key areas and that's oil and gas as well as transportation. oil price declines are still keeping companies from spending more on exploration of production gear and weakness in those markets is carrying through into parts of the transportation industry. both businesses showed sales declines over the same period last year. and the company expects that many of the headwinds will stick around into next year as well. but there are reasons to be optimistic. including avs due to a record amount of orders that haven't yet been filled and growth in a digital business that helps develop software to help industrial machines run smarter and more efficiently. ge shares recently did hit multiyear highs but did pull back after this earnings report. now a lot of the story for investors going forward is just how well ge can keep up the industrial momentum. for "nightly business report," i'm dominic chu. >>> cheap oil
