you issued a press release in support of chairman genachowski's proposal. was i fair to use the word ted it? >> well we think it's a very strong proposal. it's a very good first step in the critical step to ensure the internet remains a platform for innovation, free-speech, for the development, for the continued development of the most revolutionary communications platform ever invented. we've got three weeks where the commissioners will work among themselves to fine-tune this rule. we want to support the commissioners as the work to fine-tune this rule. certainly it needs further work. but this is a strong will and a very good first step to ensure the internet doesn't turn into something that looks more like cable tv but remains a platform where users determine consumers. you and i determine where we are going to go and what applications we want to use. >> mr. erickson, you called it a first step. would you like to see as the second and third step? >> the next step is the commission meeting on december 21st where they will vote of the proposed order. in th

chairman genachowski has experience in the private sector. prior to his of wind that he spent more than ten years working in the technology industry as an executive and entrepreneur. he co-founded the digital ventures where he served as the managing director and he was a special adviser at general atlantic. in these capacities he worked to start, accelerate and invest in early and mid stage technology in other companies. from 1997 to 2005, he was a senior executive at iacp, interactive with a fortune 500 company where his positions included chief of business operations and general counsel. chairman genachowski's public service rolls and would work for a previous sec chairmen in a legal capacity. he has previously served as the clerk for supreme court justice souter and brennan and at the u.s. court of appeals for the d.c. circuit. chairman genachowski worked in congress for senator charles schumer of new york and on the staff of the house select committee investigating the iran contra. chairman genachowski has been active at the intersection

when i testify about, about internet privacy with the fcc chair julius genachowski before the senate commerce committee at the beginning of august, it was amazing how, you know, it wasn't just chairman rockefeller, but also senator thune, senator johanns, a wide variety of people across the, you know, on both sides of the aisle. they really care about consumer privacy. and so when i watched and listened to parts of that hearing, and i think it was one of those hearings that started and then there were two hours of votes and people came back, so it was a 10:00 meeting and be ended at 2:00 in the afternoon, you know, i was very pleased by the reception. now, there's no doubt that the folks like the iab had done their homework, and they'd gone to visit members, so there were questions asked that were totally legitimate questions. but i think we are going to see a lot of resonance on capitol hill in terms of supporting consumer privacy. >> host: sure. and there does seem to be that there considering the new members, fred upton is interested in privacy, but there seems to be a disconnect

[applause] ♪ >> what is julius genachowski proposing? these new net neutrality rules of the road.hey have been the work for a year. this is something i think everyone agrees with, the carriers as well as most of the consumer folks out there, is that companies who control the internet should not be -- broadband providers should not be allowed to degrade traffic or blocked traffic. for example, people should be able to get their net flicks video and a service provider cannot degrade that because they do not want them watching that. that is something that everyone agrees on. if you see areas which are unsettled still and both sides arprobably not quite happy with, on the broadband side is basically saying, these folks should have a chance to be able to manage their networks. but he is giving them the opportunity -- allowing in the rules broadband providers can also have companies pay for premium access to consumers by their broadband pipe. if a medical monitoring company wanted to have a special service that dedicated bandwidth so that it had very high quality access to do that, that
