he took the seat of gene mccarthy in minnesota, which is always funny. gene mccarthy's popularity in minnesota after this year had just fallen, and humphrey took his seat when went back for the senate. i think he -- i don't think his heart was in running for president again in the end. >> let's turn to one of the questions from the students at the washington center. steve, go ahead. >> we talked a little bit about the ted offensive earlier in the session. can you talk about what impact reporters had in vietnam while in the election? >> it was the first time that tv was really involved in the war. the visual image in general, it was probably 16 millimeter film at the time brought back to the tv stations. there was no embedding going on. there was no control by the military of this. they just went. she showed battle scenes and things you don't see now. they brought the war really into the living roo >> 1964, the dixie crowds who were in segregationists, many of them moved to the republican party or retired. that had a lot to do with losing the south. walla

very gracious to gene mccarthy who beat him. in the next week we were out of california because reagan had a disfavorite son. i was watching -- i was at home on the east side of new york and i got a call from jeff bell, and he said bobby kennedy's been shot. i called vice president nixon mr. nixon, and david and julie were over there and they'd been watching and nad already told him. and so from there i went to the convention in chicago for nixon after our convention. and i was p in chicago in the 19th floor of what we call the comrade hilton hotel after we'd been gassed down the street watching out the window. i was by myself comes after that. we all went to the windows and i saw the police come down balboa, michigan and balboa. they were coming down in a large number, and all of a sudden they fanned out and went through the pa park. and wallace, governor wallace was at 23, but we were only at 42. so humphrey had had a horrible time all during september, the dump the hump and all these horrible things they were saying to him at

gene mccarthy had already been out, you know, campaigning against the war and against johnson and then along came kennedy, bobby kennedy, and all of this just sort of caused him to just basically give it up and say, you know, i need to be out of this. and the reason he quit was there are a lot of different ideas about it, but some say he was not healthy. others thought that he felt he couldn't win the war and couldn't do any good. maybe he couldn't win the election, his re-election. so no one really knows what those reasons were. humphries was shocked because johnson had -- when he -- when he read this over tv in a letter to people. sort of a thing that he had written, and in the morning he called -- that day that he left, he called humphreys and told him to come over in the morning and showed him a letter and said there's two endings to this and didn't tell him which one it was. humphries went to mexico on a trip and found out that he had left the presidency. humphrey didn't have any idea. he was in total shock. he thought he was going to run again as vice president. they misunderstoo

some are funny and there are democrats that gene mccarthy said with of the bipartisanship and the leaguef women voters that's where accidents happen and they are not just rules. people explain in a paragraph or two or three how they got that rule and why it was important in their life and just like jerry ford he only wrote from the heart about it and what he said at the end of that is, you know, you've got to remember ' when you raise your hand in the floor of the house you don't take an oath for the republican party come you don't take an oath to the democratic party to take an oath to the constitution against all enemies foreign and domestic and we have to give back to that and get back to civility to the it's a good book. he will have a better feel of why congress reacts in the way that it does and the different questions that you come up with as a member of the house. there was never anything like this before. it took me 20 years to put together and the funny thing about that is the have and written letters and about ten years later. but it's hard to get members of congress to sit do
