gene mccarthy had already been out, you know, campaigning against the war and against johnson and then along came kennedy, bobby kennedy, and all of this just sort of caused him to just basically give it up and say, you know, i need to be out of this. and the reason he quit was there are a lot of different ideas about it, but some say he was not healthy. others thought that he felt he couldn't win the war and couldn't do any good. maybe he couldn't win the election, his re-election. so no one really knows what those reasons were. humphries was shocked because johnson had -- when he -- when he read this over tv in a letter to people. sort of a thing that he had written, and in the morning he called -- that day that he left, he called humphreys and told him to come over in the morning and showed him a letter and said there's two endings to this and didn't tell him which one it was. humphries went to mexico on a trip and found out that he had left the presidency. humphrey didn't have any idea. he was in total shock. he thought he was going to run again as vice president. they misunderstoo

some are funny and there are democrats that gene mccarthy said with of the bipartisanship and the leaguef women voters that's where accidents happen and they are not just rules. people explain in a paragraph or two or three how they got that rule and why it was important in their life and just like jerry ford he only wrote from the heart about it and what he said at the end of that is, you know, you've got to remember ' when you raise your hand in the floor of the house you don't take an oath for the republican party come you don't take an oath to the democratic party to take an oath to the constitution against all enemies foreign and domestic and we have to give back to that and get back to civility to the it's a good book. he will have a better feel of why congress reacts in the way that it does and the different questions that you come up with as a member of the house. there was never anything like this before. it took me 20 years to put together and the funny thing about that is the have and written letters and about ten years later. but it's hard to get members of congress to sit do
