we are joined here today by members of san francisco general hospital, 5-a, 5-b and 8 of. i was moved to see all of them in the circle. 20 years ago, 10 years into it, and over 10,000 lost in this community, some individuals decided to take action. they decided to not stay in the dark, but instead to forge a path toward the light. and they gathered in solidarity to merely plant the seeds of life in honor of those lives that were not with us any longer. and just like 30 years ago, we had no idea what was coming, so, too, the individuals that came into this space 20 years ago had no idea what they were going to create. because what has been created here is sustaining for all-time. a memorial is a marker in history to tell future generations about what occurred . the interesting thing about this marker and this memorial, unlike others, is that we are still losing far too many from h.i.v. and aids. most all memorials are created avalos is done, after concluded, perhaps years. the other interesting about this memorial is that we have created a space for people to come and heal

today we honor the staff members of ward a-5, a-b and 86, all located at san francisco general hospital and trauma center. our honor's were the first people to respond to the epidemic in the 1980's. they came to work despite a poor understanding of any risk, of the lack of any real treatment or even a name for the deadly playing that was killing our friends. i'm so happy that a lot of the people still working at the ward are here also. our honorees stood close together, and in doing so, we held each other up. they are nurses, social workers, ward clerks, maintenance people, counselors, administrative staff, lab workers, farn sixths, and if i forgot anybody, you, too. they are here with us today. you will notice all of them. they are wearing these pins designed by spike, who designed our program and pins. please notice that only the honorees are winning the pins. our stories of the epidemic are packed with people who performed deeds great and small, who wouldn't have been in any other place. their names don't crop up on any ordinary internet search. they are truly unsung. today we will h

moses grossman, a pediatrician at general hospital, had nearly 40 years ago when he founded the childse council and in the san francisco etch out abuse prevention center. today, the dean and i, along with a dedicated team of public and private partners, many of whom are here today, are building a center to provide services for the safety, health, and will this for our cities children and their families. many folks are here today. they're not going to all speak. but i would like to see they can stand up to show our support? thank you. our dream, our hope, is to locate these services on 34 53rd street. at this location, we will provide a cover the spectrum of services to help kids, specifically the children's advocacy center, working with the city and county of san francisco to provide for an takoma investigation, an acute response in the case of a child sexual abuse, physical abuse, and exposure to domestic violence. every major city in america and a sister jurisdictions just across the bay, have a children's advocacy center, except san francisco. it is like not having a fire departmen

i am currently a research associate at san francisco general hospital. we are one of 13 injury centers funded by the cdc. currently i managed and direct a handful of projects aimed at reducing the incidence or recurrence of injuries among people of all ages in san francisco. many experience this -- experiences says that this leads to a sustainable results. we executed an economic analysis as a cost of auto verses pedestrian industries. -- entry. the cost is $80 million each year. we found 74% of those involved in a collision were san francisco residents and 75% of the cost was charged to public funds. that is medicare or mettetal. in 2010, 36% of art, patients were struck by cars, including people on bikes. in our cdc renewal submitted in the late fall, one of our proposals will aim to study pedestrian perceptions of violence. the goal is to establish a comprehensive database that reflects all potential variables representing risk and protective factors. our aim is to construct a database to keep san francisco policymakers informed of all aspects. this d
