and one of the things that i really think is so special at general motors is the men and women of generalotors. i mean, they worked so hard through that period, doing, in a very short period of time, what needed to be done to get the restructuring completed. the government put some money into general motors. did the government get its money back in some form or another over the years? i think-- there's a couple points. we-- there was a portion of what the government provided that was loans, and then there was-- they had some ownership in stock. we paid back the loans, and then the stock piece, they had the-- they chose when to sell it. but i would also say-- so if you go bookkeep, there is a difference there. but when you look at the jobs preserved and created because we've invested billions of dollars in the u.s. since that time to either create or maintain jobs, i think from that perspective-- i think has been successful, i will tell you at general motors, we will be forever grateful for what the government did. other than a woman running the company, what is it that makes it so success

general motors was the side of that. in world war ii when they stop making vehicles there are these ways until you have a microcosm of what was happening probably in the country before i knew much understood its politics were interesting. this was an old uniontown represented by someone elected to congress and the conservative name paul ryan. when i first showed up paul ryan was not even a committee chairman let alone a candidate for the vice presidents or speaker of the house. i had the sensor could be some interesting political tension found with this man is congressman in the state that was newly in the hands of scott walker. on top of that, i thought janesville was a cool all-american sounding name. that was appealing. if i was going to be living for a time with the name. those are some of the reasons why that summer i made this exploratory trip i met with the journalists who took me to see the side of a plant that had close those most interesting thing that happened in town and he did not want to see it. so how did

the general motors plant was paying at the end $28 an hour. he is now making 12-13-$14 an hour depending on the job, his wife is walking two part-time jobs, not making much money and they have three kid including at the time two twins who were in high school. so i met these girls, names alyssa and zia when they were high school seniors ask their great kids, teachers love them, college, bound, ap courses, really good girls and they were work between them five part-time jobs to help pay the family bills. so, those are some of the families whose stories weave through the chronology that my book tells and the story is written in short chap with these rotating perspectives. this the kind of kaleidoscopic quality i was shooting for, showing how things change over time for the families and people in the community who are trying to figure out what to do about the fact all this good work has gone away. now, i want this book to be a closeup but i also wanted to find ways to make clear that these people whose experiences i was very intimately, i hope it

weren't required to go work at general motors but you felt you should.s. rometty: yeah. this is, you know, these were wonderful programs and from companies in that day and age, this was an effort to get women and minorities into businesses. and at that time general motors had a program which was they went to some of what were the best schools and they said, if i can get you, the deal was i'll pay your tuition, your room and board, everything, and someone going through school themselves, it was a professor who said to me, hey, you ought to go look at this program. in return, work there in the summers. otherwise no strings attached. so i had a wonderful set of internships with them. when i graduated i did feel a real sense of obligation to first go to gm. i had lots of other offers but to go to gm. i was a computer science and engineering degree. david: were there a lot of men taking those courses in those days at northwestern? ms. rometty: what do you think? david: not that many? ms. rometty: no. i was probably the only woman in many of those classes even
